I can't afford a lift kit at the moment but need new tyres.....is it possible to increase the tyre profile (ideally switching to all terrains)on a standard freeleander with 16" alloys to give a little extra clearance? I'm aware that this could alter the speedo readings and gearing slightly, anyone done this, any recommended tyres?

Also, what are the pros/cons of using a lift kit or springs to achieve better clearance?

thanks.

I'm now running 215/70/16s Falken Land Air All Terrains - which are more of an HT road/AT mix than a full AT. They're nice and quiet, gave a bit of a lift and, if anything, it seems to handle better than it did on stock size. I get the impression that the speedo is wildly optimistic as standard. Testing it against GPS with the higher profile fitted, the speedo just overreads by a few MPH, which is probably ideal. The clearance at the back of the front arch is getting a bit low with these fitted, so I'd be reluctant to fit anything with a much higher overall radius on stock suspension.

Thanks for that - will look up some 70 profiles and see what's what.

Fitted a set of General Grabber AT2 to my old TD4 auto at 215/70 R16 these will give you 1/2" lift over standard without altering steering geometry.
Not the cheapest but v.good off road.

The speedo would be about 3mph out at 70mph.
The acceleration was slower as the gearing was altered with larger tyres, noise was noticable at speed - nothing like a Defender.
