lots of smoke from exhaust then lots of clattering/knocking, loss of power, also lots of smoke coming from oil filler, oil light started flickering (yes I checked oil before starting it was ok)

a mix of very black and grey, a head gasket wouldn't produce the noises this was making

it's the original engine as far as I know '87 had noticed it a bit smokey the last time I drove it but today went to collect a bike and made it about a mile it started getting really noisy and I had to turn round crawled back in 2nd belching smoke

years is probably as accurate as it gets being ex army, 29,000 according to the clock!

I'd suspect piston damage = noise and smoke. Shot big ends = noise but no smoke, ditto main bearings.

sigh, pretty terminal anyways I had been hoping to upgrade the engine but now I will have to! bugger, it's going to be in sick bay for some time!
