I cant understand why you would want to change the setup you have if your happy with it. You do have to remember it is a defender you have, they tow well,do offroad really well but they are not racing cars or motorway cruisers. I guess you will have to make a compromise somewhere as others have said.

That's what I was asking really, racing car I know but that's not what I got it for but the motorway is a necessary evil. That's where the overdrive option found favour as it did not change the vehicle just gave me a 6th gear.

Apart from the transfer box theres not much you can do except for fitting an overdrive (but they cost fooking loads). If you want a bit more kick to further the performance of your already tuned TD5, go a for a high flow air filter (K&N or Pipercross) and a straight through midpipe, greatly helps the turbo for overtaking etc.

You should have gone the V8 route , that way you dont need the ear defenders and get motorway performance , downside is fuel cost , but it would take a fair while to cover all the mod costs JMHE

Your best bet would probably be to just add a ****-load of soundproofing, that way it will make things a lot more refined. My 90 is a 200Tdi and is reasonably quiet (as in you can have a conversation easily) at it's cruising speed of 60 thanks to all the soundproofing I've put in.

There's nothing wrong with tailoring a Defender to suit your needs, not everyone can afford to have several vehicles for several different purposes.

I'm in a similar situation to you - (110 Td5 2002)

I regularly tow a 3.5T tipper trailer and recently tugged a 3 tone volvo digger including buckets, compactor plate, materials (which I'm pretty certain put me over weight but vosa wasn't about!) and have to say that compared to my old 200Tdi I don't find the Td5 as good for towing on the limit.

Either something isn't right with my engine (although seems to pull lovely with no trailer) or there isn't as much low down grunt in the Td5 as the 200Tdi.

I had a GKN overdrive on my 200Tdi and it made pulling 3.5 tone a lot nicer - I used it like a splitter in 3rd, 4th and 5th and it makes a big difference especially on long progressive hills.

When pulling the volvo digger recently I had to use low range to get out of their yard as it was quite a steep road pulling on the main road and after that it just about managed in high range the whole time unless pulling away on a steep slop.

My only concern about Disco gears would be a lot more low box required.

Personally I intend to bite the bullet and buy a roverdrive one day - Looks like it can be used in all gears, no electrics involved and easy enough to transfer to another wagon one day if I sell the vehicle for another one. I suspect it wont be as easy to use as the GKN like a splitter but I like the fact it can be used in all gears and it's all mechanical.

Also like the idea of having a slightly better cruising speed on the motorway.

Good to know - now I'm torn again!

Anyone got disco gears on a Td5 and regularly towing 3.5 tone? Would be a much cheeper alternative

Tim

Disco transfer in first gear is no or little difference
Erm, it has nothing to do with the main gearbox. The ratio change is in the transfer box so affects all gears forward and reverse.

1st with the Disco box will be higher than 1st without, by the same amount that 2nd with is over 2nd without...and so on.

The only noticeable difference is 3rd 4th and 5th

I have a 300tdi and disco transfer and towed a disco on a trailer on a tonne trailer and pulled away in high box not a problem ???

That was my understanding to.

A friend has a Td5 Disco and it sits on the motorway at 70/80 no bothers but my 110 is not sounding happy much past 60mph.

My worry would be pulling away in 1st and 2nd with a full load on - especially if it's loaded with Beech logs/chip!! ;)

Not sure I want to raise the gears in 1 and 2 for fear of making the engine/clutch suffer?

...Which must be near on 3.5 tonne? beginnig to wish I could have kept my 200 Tdi - pulled no bother.

Be interesting to hear what other Td5 owners have to say for towing ability....?

I think a disco on a Ivor is slightly less or at least it feels it! You are exactly in the same situation (I do trees as well). My thoughts are the cost of a over drive is to much although the preferred route. I am hoping a disco box may pay for itself in fuel saving? But still concerned about the towing. General driving I think should be fine as mine pulls away fine in second which is much higher than a disco first.

Discos run smaller tyres generally than defenders and that may make a big difference as my 300tdi disco pulled 3.5t fine

I have had a 200tdi 300tdi and td5 and the td5 pulls much better even standard however I would suggest a remap as it makes a world of difference. The 200 was however better than my 300

I've had no problems towing our works trucks behind my landies and most of them are 6.5 ton upwards. I regularly tow stuck or disabled 3.5 ton vans out of steep driveways and again have had no problems. I simply use low range to start off.

What engine and gearbox set up do you have?
