Hi guys, just wondered what everyone uses to strip flakey rust from metal components such as inner wheel arches, chassis' and axles?

I was cleaning up an axle today and used:
- hand-held wire brush
- angle grinder wire brush cup
- drill mounted wire brush cup
- drill mounted sand-paper type flap wheel

The angle grinder seems to do the job best, but the cups wear out quickly, don't fit around all the brackets and are too expensive.

Any suggestions?

I use an angle grinder and a hand held wire brush or file to scrape the awkward areas.

An angle grinder fitted with a flap wheel seems to manage most rust on flat surfaces.

I spent 15 quid on my cup brush and I've given it quite a few years of abuse with a powerful grinder!

You can get silverline cheapo cup brushes from my local motor factors for about three quid. They're twenty odd in places like B&Q.

I use them all the time for cleaning metal up for weld prepping and they're cracking.

Cheers guys, I've ordered a couple of flap wheels and a couple more wire cups for the grinder, but the twisted versions this time...hopefully they will last a bit longer/remove more rust.

i got one of these about 2 years ago and ive used it abused it even removed all the dead ivy off a concrete garage with it and still not fooked it up

All of the above, and a cheapo £12 rotary, dremel wanna be spinny around thingy for the awkward bits. Comes in handy with it's little grinding pads and mini wire wheels. The flex shafts you can get come in handy too for getting up in side tight spaces.

Ant, dremel is a good idea, i forgot I had my dremel! :doh:

Johnny, Thats the same type as I have bought, hopefully better than the non-twisted version I have been using previously

If you have a decent compressor in your shed, you should try a small pot blaster, far quicker job.

I've used one of these on bits & pieces in the past. Very handy tool and nowhere near as brutal as a wire wheel.

If you have awkward spots where you need metal clean enough to weld then get a die grinder or Dremel and tungsten carbide burrs to fit. they are ace
