If you want something to do a little off green laning or off roading but still behave themselves onroad, an all terrain (AT) tyre with something like a 50/50 on/off road bias is ideal. ATs are very popular for green-laners, BF goodrich being a popular brand.
If you wanna do some serious off roading in the mud (off roading pay n play sites for example), then really you should be looking at Mud Terrain (MT) tyres. These tend to have an 20/80 on/off road bias, ie they are sods on the road- very noisey, feeling like your wheel bearings have gone, shake the fillings out, and a bit scarey at anything above about 50mph....but amazing off road! (you'll be rescuing the boys n girls on AT tyres long before you get stuck yourself). I've been very happy with the Insa Turbo Dakar tyres fitting to my off road toy, but I wouldn't want to go at any speed on a motorway with 'em.

I run Insa Turbo special track tyres 235 85 16 and do 70mph on the motorway often in my 90 and it drives really nice, no wondering. Off road is really good too, can't hear the tyres as its a 4l v8!
 
...and it's a 90.
There's nothing wrong with doing 70 on them, but I'd personally rather not. Stopping quickly from 70mph is the issue
 
In this weather I would rather not go out at all at any speed. Doesn't matter what vehicle or tyres you have, unless there are spikes on your tyres your not gonna stop on the ice. Have to say on a dry day it does stop really quick, its only on wet roads that you notice the nobbles... Then you drive to the conditions.

I've not had any problems with my special tracks at speed. If I was doing regular motorway miles though I wouldn't be driving on special tracks.
 
I put Recip Mud Trials 265/75/16 on my 3.9 V8 Disco, they are noisy as f*** on the road and it feels like your driving on a cattle grid when your crawling in traffic but I didn't buy them to drive on the road, haven't got stuck yet at pay n play sites and they were shockingly good driving on sheet ice last week.
 
THE best offroad tyre to this day I believe is Maxi Cross. Being THE best its not road legal lesser tyres are road legal insa's arn't bad but most open centred lugged tyres are gonna be ok.
 
as said, maxxi cross or dumper tyres, but THE best are cut dumpers, a cross between the two, the self cleaning of dumpers but the side slope grip of maxxi cross

I ran a Disco on insa turbo trekkers 2657016s on the motorways once and was amazed at how well they drove, expected it to be much worse.

I had Recip Trial on my Disco once and they were noise and VERY grumbly at low speed, but damn good off road i reckon.

That said i now have Maxxis Buckshots in 33x12.5 and they are lovely on road, just like road tyres, but they do adsmirably off road, only getting me stuck when in sticky stuff and they slick up (where simexes do aswell it seems) or when i cant get out of a rut due to no side lugs.
