Hi there

I have a slight chain sounding rattle on start up when cold. I am thinking an oil change is due. (same happened with my S4). The handbook is not very clear on which oil is best to use. In my Audi V8 I used 5w-30 longlife even though I changed it every 10k miles. What is best for this engine?
Thanks
Rich

I'm reading a lot of conflicting information about the correct oil... Some people say 5w-30 others are saying 5w-40... What do other fellow 4.4 owners use (BMW)...

If the oil meets required spec for the engine then it's good enough, if there's a rattle then it's not the fault of the oil unless the oil is knackered.

The best oil money can buy.

Rattle could be your VANOS... 'kin expensive to fix if it goes wrong...

Search some BMW forums about changing your VANOS oil filter... it's a tiny mesh filter that screws into the VANOS unit, and apparently can prevent disaster if changed regularly...

Thanks SaintV8.

I've been trawling the forums but there's no definitive answer on best oil for VNOS rattle on startup etc. Mine started after last oil change... so looking to reinstate the quietness previously enjoyed :)

Rattle started after an oil change  What went in it:confused: Sunflower oil

I like Lucas so have a dose of this in my engine, diff's and transfer box, makes it a little quieter - might work on vanos:confused: Lucas Oil Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer 1 x 946ml | eBay

Look at the bimer forums:eek:
