Demonstrators will have sat about ticking over, been driven hard from cold and mostly done short journeys. So probably not a very good real world indicator of mpg potential unless you'd drive it the same. It's also worth looking up and understanding what and how the NEDC fuel efficiency tests are conducted to produce the offical figures.
 
Anyone that relies on the on board mpg gauge is well very gullible to say the least. Only accurate way is pen to paper.
