hi guys ...can someone - preferably someone who's actually uses these for finding byways etc ...recommend me a map app for the iPad ... we've used memory map on a PC , but now need to find a map that's good to use from ipad ..thankyooooo in advance , Al.:)

Mem map requires an Internet connection to work I believe as it downloads the maps as needed, whereas outdoors gb stores the maps on the device so no downloading needed

Are the map's expensive in outdoors
as i think memory map is £25 for the uk in 1:50k and £200 for 1:25k

You can buy it in much smaller counties, think I bought the whole of Wales for £15

1:50k is what I use for laning, and have never had any issues

Again the whoe of Yorkshire in 1:50k is £10

Thanks guys , will have a look at your link deasy .. the iPad is wi-fi and cellular , i know some apps seem cheaper but the to add other maps after can be well expensive ..

+1 on outdoors GB....I use it a lot. You can plot your routes on it before you go out too. Little time consuming but saves a lot of time when you get out there. I would like it if it zoomed in a tad more than it does but thats nit picking really.

i use mm as do most of my friends, you simply down load an app on to your i pad and then tranfer any maps and overlays to your ipad. It doesnt require internet as it works on the built in gps, ive never known mine lose gps once

Likewise.
Just make sure your iPad is not just wifi as a friend brought a non 3G iPad and MM woudlnt work.

Mine is a 3G and even with nil credit on the sim it still works for MM

You need a cellular iPad to use GPS.

The whole of the GB 1:150 maps are currently £60 on memory map website. Install these on the iPad and you don't need to download the maps when you're halfway up a mountain with no Internet connection.

Just to clear things up.

I use memory Map and have the Whole of the UK (except Northern Ireland) on my android phone and I can find my exact location anywhere without a Data connection/Mobile Phone signal. Its also available for Iphone/Ipad and the UK Complete 1:50,000 OS map only takes up 2.23Gb.

It also shows a range of stats speed/altitude/distance travelled/Time you are actually moving/avg speed/Max speed etc etc Just run it up now and it estimates my position accuracy to within 82ft!

In my opinion its brilliant and Ideal for my requirements.

If you want a free one try Maverick it will allow you to cache maps for an area in case you loose connection.

oh and btw you DON'T need a cellular connection to use the GPS!

What FK said is right. You need a cellular ipad to use GPS.
You don't need a signal to get your GPS position but you need a cellular ipad.

The wifi only only iPad DOES NOT have the hardware to locate you via GPS.
Location service will only work on a 3G ipad
iPad 2 - Starting at £329 - White or Black with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G - Apple Store (UK)

My apologies you are right the WiFi Only doesnt have it. Perhaps thats because its 'Assisted' and needs a mobile network to help it find which satelites it shold be looking for!
But a blutooth GPS should be less than the difference in price shouldnt it?
