CTC,carbon tetrachloride Was that the stuff in the old Pyrene brass extinguishers as I remember people used them to get dabs of grease of clothes, probably all empty if there actually was a fire!

That's the one, used to be in the 'partial discharge' Pyrene's carried in the cabs of London buses (& many other applications) LT eventually changed to 'total discharge' extinguishers, useless as a degreaser but useful for fighting fires ;)

Think it was acetone that made phosgene.
Cant see a fire extinguisher (which did indeed contain carbon tet) making phosgene as bound to come in contact with hot metal?

Genklene used in the aircraft industry and many others as non flammable cleaner was basically Tricho and was highly dangerous, as inhaling it's fumes through a cigarette produced Phosgene gas. That is why lots of Bae employees who smoked have lung problems today. Bae have a lot to answer for.

I used to have a supply of genklene as my brother worked for Syckes who made gear cutting machines it was great for cleaning engine parts but not so good on your hands, and I may just have some Trich in the garage from my youngest brother who used to fix printer fussed but it won't clean car jets when the fuel has gone off and coated them in brown gunk.

Trich 1.1.1, genklene, arklone all that sort of degreaser was used a lot as non flammable but pretty sure most of it was banned years ago or became unpopular to use in industry and the replacements were a compromise of being a great degreaser but highly flammable or water based and less effective.
When i was a kid and had been working in my garage on cars with my older brothers i used to wash my hands in Trich which proved to be a bad idea as the skin on my hands all cracked in a very bad way.
