what is the best disco to,tune modify, etc

my 2p, D1 200tdi (because I've got 2:cool:)

Rich.

Define best.
Off road probably the D3 with suitable mods. On road, definitely the D3/4.
However the D2 will be more reliable, and has a wider range of specialist components available for it, as long as you can find one that's not rusted away.

Depends on what you want and what you can afford.

D1 going up a lot in price
D2 finding a good one
D3 can be expensive to fix
D4 the same just cost more

Had this chat before

Facelift D2 TD5 with VNT, galvanised chassis, CDL, hose coverted ACE would tike a lot of boxes

For off road its a D1 200tdi or 300tdi non abs, cheap to modify & repair out of all the discos
that would be my choice, no electronic gremlins to chase for weeks on end.
D2 air lets it down if you bust a pipe or bag early model without ace & cdl more expensive to mod
ecu needs raised up if you end up wading too deep or your screwed then youd wished youd
bought a D1.
D3 & D4s can fuck off.
A galvanised chassis doesnt make it better off road....

+1^^^^^
Sure they rust but they are simpler to work on and can be tuned to bits with better turbos, bigger intercooler, better exhausts and fiddling with the fuel pump.
I'll never get rid of mine but I would get rid of the TD5. (Rust in chassis and electronix, even though both have been fixed, well the electronix seems to be a continuous feast of needing fixing. )

No matter what Discovery you have, by the time you have fixed it you may be out of cash, people do spend a lot " upgrading" but for the next buyer it’s a mod they may not want, as most cars a already made to be reasonably at optimum performance for a whole range of differing job, when you improve one item you may be reducing it performance in another area, as for my own I just keep it original and in a decent running order, and as it a landrover wash it at least once a year, for it MOT

D1 on a galv chassis - completely bullet proof. Either 200 or 300 Tdi - but watch the electronics on the 300's - the MFU's get fried by new alternators with high voltage set points = instant MOT fail due fog lights and such not working  ..

I would like a d1 but what puts me off is body rot. Complicated bits like rear passenger door wheel arches look like a PITA to fix .

If you can't weld, then I suggest either you learn, and bl#*dy quick, or go and buy a modern ****boxtronic money pit :eek:

The 5 door rear arches are an easy fix - try it on a 3 door, and then come complaining about the 5 door :)

And, yes I have done both  - here's SWMBO's 3 door n/s done..

Taking the side panel off was such fun - almost as much fun as putting it back on!! :D   o_O :D

Not all D1's are rust buckets, some are very clean.
Had a LR Indy do some engine work on my one and he couldn't believe how nice it was, said it's the best he seen and worked on in years.
When we went to the Gaydon LR day, peeps were amazed at the condition of it.
So they do exist.

Plus a petrol engine with eight cylinders… then its job done. :D

I had one years ago in a bob til rr, never had so much trouble with an engine and water ever in my life, mates boy had a Niva that fared much better, that gave no bother at all, put me off the rover v8 for life.
