I am not concerned with MOT issues if I removed EGR, as mine isn't a see you next tuesday. :)
I doubt I will remove it now though thanks to this thread. I might clean it up though!

I actually went to a LR garage, not a main dealer, and bought their Stainless performance exhaust. It wasn't over the top in price and it fitted perfectly. bigger bore and just one box. Sounds good too without being obnoxious.

I had a friend pop round yesterday. He had his D2 which he had done a few bits to since I last saw him. I noticed it had a bit of a grunt to the exhaust note, never heard a noise like that from any diesel in my life! I don't know what it was but he said it was a "Straight through". No way I am doing that but yours sounds much more like my kind of upgrade, sensible, but an improvement. If you felt so inclined, I would be every so grateful for a sound clip by PM! So you reckon it made a slight difference to performance too?

Sadly my D1 id hors de combat at the mo, but the noise was deffo a bit noticeable if going through an underpass or somesuch. But more to the point was that it eliminated that flat spot just off tick-over when you are pulling away from lights etc. All D1 tdi 300 drivers know what I mean. It just pulls more willingly throughout the rev range and still gave me 30 mopg or thereabouts.
But this is not a TD5 so I am not vouching for it. Except that all my life working on cars I know that a straight through exhaust that provides minimum resistance to exiting exhaust gases helps the engine breathe more easily and thus makes it more efficient. So you get better performance and/or economy depending on how you drive it.
Don't get it for the noise, get it for the performance and economy.

My TD5 has that same flat spot, they all do. Another friend of mine had a D2 with a remap done by a friend of his up in Durham a few years ago, he is no longer with us but that remap was truly incredible. I remember driving it and you could go from 1st gear to 4th gear, pulled like a train! They do vary, I have a sluggish one, but that dead spot just above idle is the worst thing about it. It has a very stiff clutch, a cheap single mass I suspect, and its very easy to stall. Anyway, I will think about exhausts, thanks

I did ask about a Vortex exhaust, they claimed a 10% performance increase. Which sounds a lot!
The LR one was cheaper.
I suspect the dead spot is probably just a bit of turbo lag.
Stiff clutch, I can't really comment, it may depend on what you are used to but I do know you can get kits which make them a bit easier.
As for single mass, I'm really happy it does not have a dual mass number. Hate them, just another thing to go wrong and they need replacing when you do the clutch.
 
Thanks. I have a LOF single mass kit here ready to fit, I agree, the LOF apparently gives the performance and longevity of SMF but smoothness of DMF. I will soon find out if that's the case!
 
got a shock today. I parked my Landy outside a place, went in then came out, and saw my bumper tail light (fog/reverse) hanging out on the end of its wire. Pic below! Ever seen that before?!

he he, I didn't think it was related to exhaust, but maybe. I was thinking of changing to LED bulbs when i buy a new unit, just to see if its a bulb overheating as thats what I first assumed it to be. Maybe I should stick on a bit of asbestos as well!

My D2 has a dead spot above idle. Sadly the dead spot goes from idle to flat out. I'm hoping it had something to do with the head gasket going. I can't remember owning a car that was so sluggish!

It's had a new pedal and new cabling between it and the ecu. I'm hoping the fact that the head gasket has just gone poopy has had something to do with the lack of performance. If not then the new fuel pump is next to go in.
Failing that it's going on ebay and i'll resurrect my D1! It was better off road than the D2 anyway...
 
No downsides under the current mot regs.

I've done quite a few TD5's and these are the benefits I've noticed:

1. Smoother tickover;

2. Smoother pickup of engine revs;

3. better low power, shown when climbing hills;

4. Slight improvement ln mpg;

5. Smoother engine overall.

You will get some or all of these benefits depending on how dirty your EGR valve and inlet manifold.

The improvements are not huge, but noticeable.

You will get more of the benefits if you remove the valve rather than just blocking it off.

Other cheap mods for improving the engine efficency:

1. Check and clean out the red plug on the ECU - with switch cleaner ideally.

2. Replace the catted downpipe with a non cat one;

3. Wash-out the intercooler.

4. Remove the MAP (on the inlet manifold) clean with brake cleaner then switch cleaner the contacts and reinstall it;

5. Clean the MAF and AAP with switch cleaner.

6. Obviously put in a new air filter - they breath deep!

I haven’t seen anyone on here mention swapping out for a new modified boost pin. Or is that not a thing to do along with an EGR delete?

I’ve been meaning to do something with the exhaust on my td5 - any mot issues with removing the cat or even going to a straight through pipe?
