I have just received two chequer plate panels for the wing tops of the defender, the latter having been dimpled and distorted. The fit of the panels in plan view is fine but the front downward curve of the new panels is shallower than the curve of the original wings to the extent that when lain on the wings there is a gap of about half an inch at the front. The chequer plate needs to be bent across its width at the front to match the contour of the original wings.

How would you advise doing this?

drill an hole either side of the cp just above the curve and poprivet it to the wings. it'll pull down and mould to the shape of the wing.

you cant unless your uri gella !!!
they need heat and lots of it and a gig as how will you bend it in the right spot ( may look ****ter)
good luck if ya try !!
easier eating my fry up !!!!

Yes and the CP will "bend" to suit the wing. if he pop rivets it and then pushes the plate down to follow the wing profile.

That is my worry that the wing pulls out to meet the chequer plate and not the chequer plate to meet the wing - chequer plate is 3mm, not sure what the wing is but less I would think.

you dont need to anneal ally cheq plate especially thin stuff.

I made my fender tops myself and bent the checker plate by hitting it with a rubber mallet after clamping the plate to the bench with the appropriate amount hanging over the edge

I think I might give this a go (gently) and then hope that the rivets pull it in the last couple of mm.

Outcome:

Turns out I was worrying about nothing. I used the self tappers supplied after drilling pilot holes (2.5mm) and gently drew up the ones at the apex of the curve in turn with those either side. The CP pulled up to the existing contour of the wings no problem. A small bead of clear silicone around the periphery and job done.

I am no fan of CP but the wing tops were heavily dimpled. The kit came from Yardley Engineering, UK and was a good fit with countersunk holes and self tappers provided.

Thanks to those who made comment.

Well done. I love it when a Plan comes together.. :D

Well nearly. Offside wing top still needs doing. Small problem with the remnants of the original aerial which has seized in the hole. Turning the top retaining ring 9which really needs a special turn) just results in the bottom spinning. I have fired WD 40 on it and will try retaining the housing beneath the wing with molegrips and fabricate something to turn the top retaining ring. Failing that a hacksaw and half an hour may be necessary :-(

I'd just go for an hacksaw 1st. 5mins and it'll be gone. Mask round the wing to save the paint, though the CP will cover it anyway
