My came out last week. I was just coming off the motorway. Anyway, a pal of mine drilled out the old thread and re-threaded it and put a helicoil in. Just thought I'd say in case it's quite rare for 'em to come off. The bolt sticking out too far is probably why it wasn't as secure as it should've been.

Nothing to do with the bolt you have circled, the one that holds the tensioner to the block is underneath.
 
In the pic it looks like the whole belt tensioner has come free from the engine.

My mate came back from Dubai a fortnight ago. He'll be there all throughout March next year. He's the travelling landy race mechanic for a chap who owns a landy worth half a million and razzes it all over the sand dunes in Arab land. There's nothing at all he doesn't know about landys, in fact he's into innovation/invention too. He circled the pic.

Not unheard of - probably overtightened by a PO - happened to SWMBO's D1 not that long ago - and I fixed it in the same way your pal fixed yours...

Keep your eye on the belt - cos the "experience" didn't do SWMBO's any good at all :eek: ....:rolleyes:

He changed it whilst he was doing the job. The one that was on was shredded down one side. I was surprised that the main symptom is the PAS goes.

Indeed - as was SWMBO !! But it also means you have no water pump or alternator - the latter = so what - the former is more of a problem ....... New HG anyone ;) :rolleyes: :eek:

All I heard was a one second sound akin to a clock spring unravelling, then battery light came on. Powersteering went a few minutes after that (or straight away but I was on a straight of the motorway). Fortunately not too far off home so got there in time :0)
 
Your water pump stopped pumping the second the belt let go..... :( Hopefully, all is well, but if the HG goes, you'll know why....
 
I would also keep an eye on the helicopter repair. I had the same with the timing belt tensioner on my 200tdi. It was repaired with a helicoil but the helicoil then also pulled out (all be it 2 belt changes later) at which point I had to replace the timing chest.

Also your belt looks very narrow compared to the pulley, but I am not familiar with the serpentine belt setup.

That particular pulley on the 300's is a double pulley to enable an AC compressor to fitted above the FIP - and be driven from it - so it looks large on the photo for that reason :)

That would explain it, many thanks, as I said I am not familiar with the engine as I run a 200.
