I have a Mazda engine converted rangey, I think it's bolted straight to a V8 bellhousing SEEMINGLY without any sort of adaptor plate.
Everything runs fine, but the bottom inch or so of the bellhousing is not mated to any surface on the engine, meaning you can touch the flywheel if you really fancy it

I've read about people putting in a bellhousing bung when wading - where does this normally go? (Forgive my ignorance, it's my first 4x4, used to working on VW's)
I was going to make up a plate to cover it completely and put a breather on it if it needs to breathe but not sure how much air it'd need. Is a standard axle / tx case breather size okay? Or is there already a breather hole somewhere else (the one that needs 'bunging up' as mentioned in those overpriced wading kits).

Thought I better cover it up before I do much more offroading... My starter motor went all of a sudden last time I was out and part of me suspects loads of mud and **** worked its way in there which lead it to jam. Though when I took the starter apart it seemed mechanically fine, just burnt the field coil out.

what was the original engine and model of the car, maybe you can make up a plate to cover the gap!

the v8's arnt bolted to the bellhousing below the block so they have a plate to cover the bottom third of the flywheel. the wading plug is on the bottom of the bellhousing the other side of this plate. (presuming it is actually a v8 bellhousing, should have a flat bottom and two "ears" a the top)
as its bolted to the bellhousing perhaps you can modify one of these to fit. pretty easy to get, theres some on ebay now.
