I know to many on here the idea of tinkering with there Landy is something they do everyday but to me, a complete novice when it comes to anything mechanical, it is something I havea been putting off until I can't afford the labour costs. Well, that day has come. I blew the head gasket a week ago and the parts are inexpensive the skimming and pressure testing isn't to extortionate but the money wanted to do it I couldn't find. So Haynes manual in hand and SORN done I am working through it.

So far oil drained, water drained I flushed out the rad. Water finally ran clear. Removed the plastic bit over the fan and some hoses. Going to flush out inter cooler too then get to work on the gasket. Any tips advice and recommendations on what substances to use while I for the first time get my hands dirty would be very much appreciated.

It's a G reg defender 110 with a 200tdi in it. I got the fuel pump completely refurbed less than a year ago and that is all so far.

For the intercooler most people use white spirit. You can use petrol. Any solvent that will evaporate really.

just pour it in and let it sit overnight make sure its dry before putting back in, head gasket just take your time and if need be take plenty of pics with your phone as you go so you can see where things go back,if ya get stuck just ask on here plenty of help.

Nice one I'm sure i'll be asking for advice along the way. If it all goes succesful will I notice a difference servicing everything

i usually remove it and lay it flat. pint or so of petrol, leave it, slosh it backwards and forwards, empty it from the bottom outlet, and do it again. and again if necersary.

Nice one. If I wanted to put a bigger intercollegiate in going right across the front of the rad how difficult is this and would I have to start to mess round with fuel injector and turbo. Is it worth it

It's a very simple job. It won't make much difference by itself, but in conjunction with fuel/turbo it turns a tdi into a very driveable vehicle. There are plenty of guides on how to do everything, much like your head gasket read lots of things first. (there is a very good one floating around on here ;) )

It's worthwhile ensuring your rad is in good condition before you fit a full width intercooler because they can reduce airflow getting to it.

Cheers the only ones I see are 400 quid is there any cheaper prices anywhere for a full width inter cooler. I have flushed the rad and will give it a good clean what else do I need to do to make sure it's working well enough for a full width inter cooler

Yeah i'll defo be sorting the head gasket out. But while I'm replacing all the seals and doing all that I thought it may be as good a time as any to up the size of the inter cooler and mess with the turbo and fuel injector

Just looked at the eBay link you sent will that go across the front of the rad and is it not Ricky getting the hosing from the other side. The allsprt ones have in and out same side.

Going to have to move the rad over a little to the middle so I can bring the pipes around each side of it, had a measure up and it should fit as I also have my winch right up against my rad as well, as soon as it gets delivered I will no for sure how much work it will be to fit, I know the allisport ones have the in and out on the same side but cannot see how they can justify the price they are asking;)

How bad is this or is it easily solved

Needs to be an awful lot cleaner, especially between the centre two cylinders. I use a scotchpad lubricated with WD40 or similair for cleaning gasket surfaces. I don't like rust in bores either, if it's pitted the cylinder wall there will be oil consumption/smoking issues. Make sure the engine turns freely by hand still as looking at that a ring may well be rusted to the bore.

Thanks for that. I'm a complete novice with this how would I turn the engine turns by hand.
I didn't think them two cylinders looked correct. The gasket looked pretty shot as well I will try and get a picture of that. On the manifold there was a lot of rust and a white residue also on the underside of the head where the valve inlets are

I put back together a 2.5 petrol that had been missing its head for several months and it was spotless inside the bores. You seem to have a lot of crud in there somehow?!
