Yes, the fob battery needs changing and no, you ain't talking out of your arse, dwalsh. The OP needs to get a new battery smartish though as it only gives you about a year before it packs up.;)
 
I finally got round to changing my battery the other day. It's only been beeping for about 6 months. But being tight, I made it last as long as I could.

Signal strength? Coded message from the fob? Various ways are possible.

Spot on GG. When fob battery drops below a set threshold. An extra bit of data is added or removed, I can't remember which. There's a definite change in the data string makeup, between a good battery and a low battery. I tested this on a scope many moons back, as I was curious about it myself.

Yes. The fob battery is nearing the end of it's working life. Mine worked on for 6 months before I changed it. But I suspect that some batteries last longer than other's.
