Well...

I have priced it all up and going genuine is about 300 and going non genuine is about 150....

That is every thing needed for a full gear box rebuild.

I will be fitting a new ashcroft hi-range transfer case so I gotta take the hit from that as well.

However, they are not avalible untill October so I got some time to save my pennys.
 
i wouldnt go down the cheap bearing route

but if you have the bearing sizes (stamped in the bearing) then try and get some from a bearing stokest that way they are good quality bearing but not the high price
 
in their favour ... a new non-genuine bearing is likely to be better than a knackered genuine one. And how many folk really do a lot of miles in their series? I imagine there's very few of us who rely on a series, day in, day out, as their only source of transport for 10,000 miles plus a year.

If you don't mind I would like to throw in my 2 pennies worth.

Don't know about you but I am pretty fed up with the quality of parts I'm getting at the moment. Spring bushes that last 2 years, new freewheel hubs that leak, Door pins that don't fit, the list is endless.
For this reason, I would go the genuine rout. Unless you have a removable X member, getting the gearbox in and out is a pain in the butt so I would only like to do it once.
 
stick to quality bearing like timken, skf, ect, forget the chinky and indian rubbish go to a bearing specialist, they tend to stock quality makes, most off my local landrover stockists only supply crap bearings,

i have just finished rebuilding my series 3 box, bought all my bits of shop4 autoparts off the net cheaper than anywhere else, and all quality bearings
 
Genuine in any place which is a pain in the ass to get to. Wheel bearings I am not too fussed about as they only take a few minutes to do....gearbox...hmm, i wouldn't want to find out the hard way tha the non-genuine parts are rubbish!
