All of my insurance (house, buildings, motor etc) has been with the NFU for years and I get a good deal.

Recently I went to look at a vehicle but wouldn't know if I would be buying it until I saw it. I thought I would give AF a go, so on the Friday I phoned them up and explained that I was going to look at a vehicle on the Monday but didn't know if I would be buying it or not. I made it crystal clear to the woman what I wanted and promised to let them know on the Monday of the outcome.

I didn't buy the vehicle so phoned them on the Monday afternoon to say cover wasn't needed but obviously I would pay for the cover I had. I had already paid them £40.80 so assumed they would deduct the days cover I had used (even though I never drove the vehicle).

By Tuesday I heard nothing, so gave them a call. Not only did they want to keep the £40.80, but wanted another £46.87 to cancel it! When I complained she said it was all in the t&c's. They even offered to let the policy run on a vehicle I had never driven, never owned........... unbelievable! Not to mention the arrogant attitude of the woman on the phone.

I've heard some really bad things about AF, but gave them the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake!

Just the week before I knew someone that was having difficulty getting insurance so I said to try AF, he did and spent £400 with them.

I've not yet paid the £46.87 but since it's on a DD no doubt it'll be stolen from my account.

As a matter of interest I asked the NFU how much they would of charged, the answer was nothing as it would have been added to my account on the Friday and removed on the Monday if I didn't buy the vehicle. Incidentally my renewal with the NFU for a Discovery 2 is £166 fully comp including recovery.
 
What I've done in the past is buy 24hrs insurance. Loads of companies will do this online automatically so you can do it the spot in minutes if you have a smart phone.

Cost me about £20 the last time
 
NFU are quite good, I am with Cornish Mutual, a similar mutual rural insurer!:)

Mine is about 160 full comp an the 90!

I once rang AF, they seemed to be completely stumped by the fact that I wanted to use my landy for business, although millions must do this! :confused:

I suspect the real issue was that I am a middle aged chap with an excellent driving record, and a cheap old vehicle, so they weren't actually going to get a lot of money out of me! ;)

During business hours all I would do is ring CMA, they would cover the vehicle, no charge if I cancelled. Also, when I buy a vehicle and change the cover onto that, they provide cover free for a fortnight to allow me to sell or otherwise dispose of the old vehicle.:)

No, that wouldn't be so good, but I always do, I keep them going even if I don't have the car, to preserve no claims. Not having a vehicle at all would not be a viable option living here.

I also think you get much better treatment from insurers if you have other insurances with them, all our house and farm insurance is with them, and five vehicle policies, so they are a bit more interested in keeping our business than someone who just has a car policy.

they insured my frontera - my mrs had an accident in it they found insurance via their broker system were the only ones that would touch her on the modified car. great you might say.

just you try and cancel that policy once you get another sensible(68 bhp) unmodified car(berlingo multispace) for her a few months down the line and they want nearly double the price to insure the sensible car for the remainder of the policy (from the unsensible car) - i get it they specialize in modified cars.....

then find out it will cost 60 quid to cancel the policy, you still then have to pay another insurer for the extra few months and you lose the no claims you acrued in that few months.... got you by the balls.

roll on june when the renewal on the berlingo is 1/5th of the price of AF with almost any other insurer.

Ps ive been in the scenario above with other insurers and its never been an issue.... - mostly because going from car A to car B has never increased the policy by 100% - even when car B was modified significantly over car A ..... i found it very odd that going from modified silly to unmodified sensible increased it by so much.

I won't say I'm glad I'm not the only one scammed by AF because I'm not, but a quick google search throws up a lot of cases of people being scammed by AF. In my case they said it was in the t&c's, but you don't get the t&c's until after they've got your bank details. Surely that is fraudulent in itself :mad:

I been thinking about this. Don't you get something like 5 days 'cooling off' period for any remote contract?

Surely cancellation fees can't be charged for during this period?

You are quite right beasty, but I don't have the funds to challenge a big company and I don't expect many others do either. Which is probably how they get away with it. I know AF are sponsors to this forum (and other forums) but that doesn't give them the right to treat customers with contempt. The only way to avoid this happening is never to use them :(

I've just had clarification from a legal source that the 'cooling off' period for such a contract like this is 14 days. Also, the t&c's were not emailed until after the said remote contract had been formed.

I have now cancelled the DD, so it will be interesting to see if AF wish to dig themselves into an even deeper hole.

Should they wish to take me to court, the implications for them would be the repayment to all other customers they've scammed in this manner.

That they wished I was twenty year old, already banned twice, and with a heavily modded and expensive toy! :rolleyes:

I have clean driving history and af are much cheaper than anyone for my chevys, swinton undercut them on my landies and the wife's Peugeot, but principally because of their cashback offer.

I think you get 14 days cooling off but I agree the cancellation fee still being payable is sharp - no idea whether it is legal or enforceable - wouldn't be surprised if it was their commission :D.
 
iirc whilst you don't get the full t&c until after, things like the cooling off period and cancellation charges are terms that thay have to tell you on the phone when you take out the policy, trouble is for me I switch into snooze mode whilst they go through the stuff they have to go through.

as they record the calls - no idea how long they have to keep the recordings for - if they haven't told you the terms you should have a good case.

if I was buying a car I would get the quotes etc then only put it in force at the point of sale
