Evening Folks,

Just wondering what car battery is best for a 2004 TD5. Not wanting anything cheap and nasty. I work away from home a month at a time so have to jump start it when I’m back normally.

Whatever battery you fit get yourself one of them small solar panels that sit on the dash whilst you are working and see how it is when you get back, about 10/15 quid.
I have been using Yuasa on my D3, best so far, Exide was crap, and started to go down at under 12 mths old.
 
Plus 1 to the yuasa and agree with regards to the exide being crap ^^^^^^

got my yuasa 019 for the D3, via halfords using a trade card

If I may also plse add , originally got my exide from Tayna, when my exide started to fail they wanted me to send it back, alas most couriers wouldn’t accept a battery, so from then on got mine from Halfords as then if anything went wrong would be considerably easier being able to drop it back to the shop
 
Ref the CTEK, this is what I done by fitting a 12s socket on the front of my house, drilled through the wall for my charger to be placed in my hallway , I then just plug it in after making up my own lead, fused the connections inside the landy

also included a warning sheet for anyone that u can print out for ur dashboard to remind u to disconnect the charger

Plus 1 for the CTEK, I got the 7.0 seeing it also comes with a 12 Vdc supply , very handy when doing software updates

also been looking at some of the battery boost stater packs, NOCO GB50 from Amazon, as can pay over 5 x months at £32.00 instalments

did See some of those solar panels u can put on ur dashboard , alas not sure if 20 watts would be enough to keep a 100 amp battery topped up ??

+1 for the CTK 7.0 charger. I used a discount code at Tayna batteries when I bought it.
BTW… Best place to purchase batteries too for a Disco 2! ;)

I think they have all gone off track a tadge!
I assumed you drove to car park, left car hopped on boat/rig etc and had no access to mains power.

Mate had car he did not use for weeks at a time, always a non starter, so got the small panel, and it always started from then on.
Last boat we had was much the same, the small panel kept it topped up just enough to start.
 
Exactly , What’s the best solar panel system to go for and one with plenty of W to keep the battery alive whilst parked up for 4 / 6 weeks etc

Hi. The D2 Td5 needs one with both values to be at least 110AH 850CCA , the best i found is this https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/bulletbatt/c31-1000/ still going strong after 5 years

Yes I assumed too car left at home if not, I got the NOCO gb40 for cousin a couple of weeks ago as his alpha can go flat in a week, once charged up it will stay that way for up to a year , has a torch in it and can charge your phone too , was cheaper at Halfords than Amazon if you buy it online and collect in shop
do belt and braces and get both, in cloudy winter panels will not put much juice out, but cars usually don’t use much just sitting part from cousins MIto 😨
 
Also looked at this 10 w panel, has the MPPT incorporated , being a renogy should be half decent , would have thought if the battery is fully charged it should be able to keep the battery topped up , but alas the more knowledgeable members will know

think mine uses around 16 Ma after the vehicle has gone into sleep mode

I guess that's around 0.5A in full sun, when not behind a window etc. how many hours of full sun do you get in real life and would the panel be pointed South? How's much power does the controller take 24/7?

Many thks as always as I know ur up a lot more with regards to these

my current yuasa battery will last around a month if it’s not used, found the specs of the panel, indeed would be very handy if it saved me from plugging the CTEK in every month , would just put the panel on the dashboard

funny enough do have a renogy 160 watt panel and separate 50 amp DC to DC charger that also has a MPPT controller built in , just haven’t got round to fitting it as need some long roof rails

I suppose it all depends how much sun the car sees during the day. Plus i don't know how much usable sun gets through the glass. Maybe i should do a test!!
My problem is, for much of the day, especially in winter, drive (pointing west) is in the shade until after lunch when the sun is already very low

good point with regards to how much the glass reduces the power of the panel , assume they could be tested with a multimeter outside and then inside to see how much the glass effects the panel output

at one time I did think about laying my larger 160w panel on the rear parcel shelf until such times on getting some of the long roof rails , been looking for a second hand set seeing there around £200
