Hello. What is the biggest size battery I could fit into battery tray of a 300tdi discovery? I've done a search but it's not working.

069 or 072 is the battery reference, but the do come in slightly different sizes length, width or height depending on the manufacture so beware as an extra 20mm could give as issue.
If u have an a/c pipe near the battery tray, a battery won’t just drop onto the tray horizontal as the battery sits under the pipe.

Thanks for the replys. Got a 072 excide batter on at moment. Bought new last year but has always struggled to turn engine over on a cold day. Disco is a auto edc.

An 072 should be more than capable of the job at hand - assuming it's a decent spec - I've seen them from 54Ah and 540 CCA, to 80Ah and 720 CCA - IIRC, Tayna actually recommend a 54Ah one - which IMHO is completely ridiculous - simply NOT up to the job ..

Also, IIRC, Battery megastore have a 1000CCA battery which will fit - but Sierrafery and Discool make good points about fitting - that AC pipe is a ****

What spec is your battery ?

It's probably time to check earth straps/points, and get them clean and shiny... and avoid your handbrake cable becoming the only earth, failing, and making a mess of the highest order

It's got new earth strap from engine to battery. Starter connections have been cleaned up. Battery is 70 ah 580 cca. If disco didn't start straight away the starter struggled to turn engine over fast enough.

Hi Chris have exactly the same problem done the same fixes and also an edc have a new 630 CCA battery the only time I've got this thing cranking fast enough was with a 1000cca battery but still think I just masked the problem. only thing I can think of is the starter motor is worn or could do with a strip and clean which I will do when I get time.good luck with yours.

My own D1 300Tdi auto, which was EDC till #4 injector left the building , has a 74Ah 720 CCA Varta on it, so I suspect either your battery is goosed *, or the starter motor is not up to the job - this always assumes that the rest of the system is good - any fault codes ? Check engine light still working as intended ? is the FIP noisy ?.... is the vehicle well maintained ? I.E. is the engine is decent order ? - How many miles ?

* a drop test would be worth doing IMHO....

@CHRIS HILL & @mr glee .... some more info would be valuable - such as standing battery voltage, and battery voltage running ..... the alternators on these obviously wear out, but are also easy to fix - IIRC, the rebuild kit is about £20 from evil bay....

Don't have a reader but engine check light does it thing 190000 miles serviced regularly since 100000 before that unknown.fip is buzzing 12.6v standing 14.1v idle no load 13.9 v idle high load.

Sounds like your starter motor needs a bit of TLC then :) - certainly would be my first port of call..;)
