need a new battery for the 76 diesel, haven’t bought a battery in the UK in years cos I’ve been living in Spain, the Argyll cold has killed the pischy wee 70ma one that’s in it and I’d like to put in something a bit heavier duty was thinking 110ma, any advice appreciated.....

Get the biggest that will fit in the tray. Looking at where you are I'd go to the nearest agricutural machinery place and get them to see what fits. You want 100-110 AH but also a high CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) - the CCA is a good guide for carnking a diesel in cold weather, you a want around 800 amps. Will an 019 size fit?

I've just looked at the weather, you'll be knee deep in snow soon....
I've wasted a lot of time cranking old diesels too slowly in cold weather, unlike a petrol if they are turing too slowly they never get to auto-igntion temp and you run the battery down without a single fire. I now have the biggest battery and starter I can fit (and a flame start as its a Perkins).

Aye, it’s frosty here just now, I’ve forgotten what it’s like after living in the sun for years!....mine is a totally original 76 diesel which spent most of its life on a banana farm in Tenerife.....it’s getting a bloody shock now....

Great, thanks for that I’ll check out the 019 tomorrow. Think the one out my tractors a bit big.....

I put a second battery under the passenger seat of mine wired directly to the starter with an isolator switch. Spins like a goodun........
