What rating is the relay? You trying to use it to pass the starter current?
If you are trying to switch manually for starting, a 500amp marine battery selector switch does the job. A relay driven from the D+ line to the coil can be used to automatically connect the battery to the alternator for charging, I use the starter relay from a lawn tractor for this as it will take a couple of hundred amps.

I am trying to use a starter solenoid off a series 3 land rover but tut havnt tried to pass any starting amps through it yet only charging amps and that worked for about 5 min before it packed up and would not pull in the soleniod although there was voltage at the exciter terminal so will be sending it back ,
The trouble is now I will be laying the car up for 3 months as I have to go back to Australia tomorrow and wont be able to do anything untill april.
The question is can the solenoid take extended time being engaged or is it just meant to be momentary for stating purposes and will i still have trouble burning out the exciter coil?

If it's a starter solenoid, it may well be rated only for intermittant use.

Hi Guys.

Ok, so today changed the battery over and fitted a new Bosch 920cca battery.
All is well.

Something I had noticed for a while before changing the battery was on the panel of death, the warning 'air suspension inactive' (or something similar) came on as I started it up.
Now then as it started and the suspension worked and the warning went out I didn't think anything of it.

Now then, with the new battery installed, the 'air suspension inactive' warning has not come on.

Does anybody think early signs of a battery problem could ping up this air suspension warning?

I am thinking that maybe in the cars 'brain' it knows the battery is getting weak and stops any monitoring of suspension to conserve battery power for engine starting.

anybody know facts??

cheers..

ok. so a few weeks with the new battery. All is well.

Actually, the difference in the battery is so obvious.

Anyway, so far totally recommend this battery..

Because of the poor design of the ECU power supplies, low battery voltage causes random mal functions. Nothing as smart as a deliberate designed in shut down to save power that I'm aware of:)
