Just ordered one of these:
Alphaline Heavy Duty Battery / Alphaline Batteries / Batteries by Application

Based on recommendations I read on here and also a search on the web site.

I just noticed the terminals are centre and not in the corner, so hoping the cables will reach them. Pos looks ok, neg looks like it may be tight though.

Other than that1000 CCA sounds quite amazing and if you like them on Farcebook you can get a discount.

My existing LR type 664 (re-badged something else) is not charging. Cells levels are ok, kept an eye on those, but the charger reckons it has charged and the voltage never goes above 12.5 to 13V. Once connected up it drops significantly and quickly.

Hope the new one does the job.

Ta.

That's the one I've got and it fits just fine.

One of the terminals is a bit of a stretch, but that more because the battery is big, rather than the terminal in the wrong place.

I called them and asked to be sure, he said it is ok.
If you guys have fitted the same battery (it is the only part number that fits the P38 other than the 750CCA version), then I hope to be ok.

Cheers

You will! I put one on a couple of weeks ago (after taking the advice of the wise ones on this forum). Really pleased with it - cranks well and starts up easy (now I've got the glowplugs sorted). No more strange messages on the dash either, and both keys work again too. :) and the leads do reach

Good stuff.:D

Yep all of the above,
Fitted on my p 38 and boy does she crank over well to
Good company to deal with, very obliging and cracking delivery and wonder of wonders, polite considerate delivery driver.
Unfortunately in t his weather didnt have it long had to fit it on my tractor to keep it going but as soon as I get some money in,its number 1 on my hit list, well it is my birthday this year if there are any rich millionaires looking to help out,tee hee

Well Friday started with a flat battery. Less than a week old Alphaline 1000CCA.

Must be the BECM draining it..........? I live in a remote area but there is WiFi, a femtocell and a wireless power monitor running and WiFi next door too.

It has done about half a dozen trips, all fairly short (20 mins) so not great on the re-charge front.

I have had it on charge for 2 days now and the green indicator has not popped back fully. If you wiggle the battery a little you can see it though.

Seems to be at 13.9V and the trickle charger says it is still charging.

I have disconnected the RF receiver and will try the test for sleep mode soon once it has fully charged and reconnected.

I have very occasionally had an Alternator Fault pop up, but that goes again very quickly, so maybe the alternator is actually not providing a good enough output.

Unless I have been sold a pup.............

If you have had alternator fault pop up, odds on there is either an alternator fault or a bad connection. It sounds like the battery may not be getting charged rather than being drained.

My BECM seems to be going to sleep if I follow the procedure as below:
To test for sleep mode:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switch off interior lights (hold central button on light above
centre of dash for several seconds)
Open Drivers door window and close door.
Insert Ignition Key and turn to position 2
Turn to off and leave the key in the barrel
Open the drivers door and the key-in message will be displayed
on the instrument pack
The interior lights should still be off.....
Wait for 2 minutes (sometimes closer to 2 minutes 30 seconds)
for the BeCM to go to sleep
If you can still see the Key-In message then the BeCM is awake.
If the message has gone, and you do something to wake the
BeCM (try opening the bonnet), you'll get a bleep from the dash.
This indicates that the BeCM has been awakened
If you do this with an ammeter in series with the battery lead
you'll see the current draw around 0.6 to 1A when the BeCM is
awake and more like 0.03A when it's asleep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although I did not do the test with an ammeter
So looks like you are right Datatek, cable/connection or alternator fault.
The red cable going to the battery's positive post is slightly discoloured at the insulating sleeve by clamp, almost like it has been hot at some point.

I will start there and check the earth too.

If it turns out to be the alternator itself, I am up for a repair kit if I can find the correct one. At the moment I have a Magneti Marelli A127M-120 (AMR2938).

JCR Supplies seem to do some components. AUTO ELECTRICAL PARTS

Don't forget an alternator diode pack fault will drain the battery.

Would the best way to diagnose that be to compare the voltage over a period of time with the alternator both connected and disconnected? Engine off of course.

Trying to source a repair kit with diode pack too.

Island 4x4 do a new alternators of course:
Britpart £79.99 +VAT.
Denso £125 +VAT.

Hmmmmm

Disconnect the main wire from the alternator and see if the battery still drains.

Battery seems to have stopped draining, I have done nothing...... except left a solar charger connected the whole time.
Getting 13.9ish volts at 2K rpm. Maybe a tired alternator.......

I would have thought so too, but there is mention of needing 14.2 on some other threads.

Cheers

14.2 is the maximum you will get on a 14.2 volt controller. However if the battery is a calcium one 14.4 would be better. From 1999 petrols had a 150 amp alternator fitted with a 14.5 volt controller. The diesels retained 14.2. You ideally need to be near that (13.9 is not shabby) at 2000 RPM with the headlamps turned on.
