Hi Everyone - this will probably be some strange earthing problem but it's baffling me. From today, when the ignition is off the battery warning light remains on ... even when the key is removed. At the moment the Landy starts normally and the warning light goes out at you'd expect.

As all electrical problems seem related here another bit of info. Last week a Landy specialist had to bypass my immobiliser as my only key fob had broken. He installed a new wire from the relay to the solenoid and use Autotune to hack the immobiliser. As far as I know nothing else was changed.

Any sugestions?
 
hi there, i have recently had this problem with my defender 90 and it turned out to be the alternator was playing up so i put a recon one on and now its fine :)
 
Thanks John_1987 - that's the conclusion I've got to. I hope to get a new Alternator on Friday. The battery was so flat this morning I couldn't jump start it and had to bump it into life.

Apparently main dealers can't get alternators at the moment; they're on back order and none are available. I know it's odds-on that Ford will be dragged down by its pensions deficit at some stage, but this must be down to component manufacturers.

I'll post an update when I've fitted the new alternator.
 
have you checked the wiring to the alternator is okay first? I've seen some very strange alternator wiring faults occur on French cars that give the symptoms you describe! Best one i've seen, the alternator light had been wired into the same system as the stop solenoid as part of an alarm installation, was fine for years then started keeping the battery light on all the time, took a while to resolve!
 
Thanks Vanny - that was the first thing I looked at, together with the connections on the ignition switch. The work I had done last week to bypass the immobiliser made me suspicious that an earth connection had come loose, or something like that.

Your experience at least will give me something to look at should the new alternator not cure the problem!
 
Well it was the Alternator after all. Lesson learned. Thanks to Paddocks for getting one to me so quickly.
