hi

what is the voltage with the engine off and then running

think u will have to find out where the oil is coming from , so if u have to replace the alternator it won't damage the new one

Definitely sounds like a new or reconditioned alternator is called for. The oil is probably coming from the vacuum pump which is built in and does have a small oil feed to it. Having to give the alternator a clout every now and then certainly sounds like a worn and sticky brush.

"been having trouble with the battery light coming on , its not all the time but when it does it drains the battery" that would take months. :D

when the light came on it was matter of minutes before the car would nt start and had to be jumped started to luckily get me 4 miles home

As previously suggested it seems u have an iffy alternator, what I was saying is the 'battery light' being on won't drain your battery as you stated.
So test and if a fault is found (not charging) then replace the alternator or have it refurbished, if you can do with out using your vehicle for a week, that's if 'refurb' is still possible now days :)
You don't have a disasters in the scheme of things other than there's a small cost involved as always.:(
