L322 4.4 V8.

On way home in London rush hour.

Battery light came on then the Power Steering went then the Central Console went bing bing bing........etc everything was saying inactive Air suspension, HDC I think I saw a few temperature messages temperature gauge went up into the red and I have never seen that before I saw transmission ... Then It went in transmission Crawl Mode. This happened all with in 2-3 minutes. When I turned it over it was very juddery and died.

So Pulled over and got flat bed recovered. I did try to drive car on flat bed, but would not start not enough battery power to turn over. Then it locked in park with absolutely no battery power. Doors would not lock and had to use key. Jump started it next day and while on donor car it started and ran smooth disconnected car ran for a minute or so and coughed and burped and died. Or when disconnecting from donor car it just died instantaneously.

Can anyone shine a light here. My betting is battery but why did I get all the other crap bing bing bing messages on console and why did I loose my power steering. Battery is only 4-5 months old from RAC if relevant.

I am now going to take battery out and put on charge over the day and night this morning.

Sounds like your alternator has packed up
With all the electricals on an L322 a full battery would quickly drain if it's not being charged by the alternator

The electrical systems will then show all sorts of strange faults with the battery draining lower

You will have the lovely water cooled alternator on yours ;)

+1 to the above - Range Rovers hate low volts...the power steerinf went hard for two reason, engine dieing and also there is a servotronic valve that varies the stiffness of the Powers steering depending on road speed....low volts will feck it all up.

And as Hippo lovingly points out, the 4.4 has a water cooled Alternator which when bought new will be serious bucks...but can be had reconditioned I believe for less, but can still be a shock to the wallet...!!!

Island do the Bosch at £400excl VAT and a Britpart at £250excl VAT....obviously can be had elsewhere

GSF Car Parts list at £480 and will give £108 back on exchange.
 
wow that was quick. once replace and charged up and RSW ALL comm'd will the power steering come back to life or is it actually now fcuk. When I jumped it yesterday the temp gauge was heading for the red. Not checked coolant for a few days but should be ok.

Thanks for this, Do I need check my alternator for anything, or is it what it is and off to the tills.

Is it worth charging battery to get car to garage or get it recovered. If so I will need to check for the release on the bonnet to flip bonnet to windscreen and the battery removal procedure, that probably on the forum somewhere.

You guys amaze me with your knowledge and speed.

Steering will be fine once you have good voltage...when I said fecked, I meant the low volts will cause it not to function correctly...

Charge the battery and start the engine, using a meter, at idle across the battery should read around 13.9v or thereabouts...have an able assistant hold the revs at 2k and after about 30seconds keep it at 2k rpm and measure again and you should be 14.2-14.5v

I can only assume though your Alternator is on its last legs if it dies like that and will run with a boost/jump from another vehicle and yet die when that is disconnected.

As for the Bonnet Service Mode....it is detailed in my Radiator How To in the How To section...simple - Open Bonnet, release the two gas struts (hold the bonnet while you do this as one strut is not enough to hold it up!) and then flip the bonnet upright and engage the locking tabs....simple as!

I have heard there is a special battery removal procedure so I will check on the forum for one.

Of course it could always be the belt gone.
That is very true....belt drives:

Water Pump - Hence your Coolant Warning
Alternator - Hence your flat battery
Power Steering Pump - Hence no steering assistance

I would have thought not seeing the big fan at the front not spinning would be a big clue mind!

I think Keith has hit the nail squarely on the head with this one, the rest of us were assuming he had checked the belt as this would be obvious if it had gone!....but yer never know!
 
good point I was not under the bonnet when engine on I was in the car keep the revs

So no spinning fan and no belt ie snapped or missing. I will check that . Will have to charge battery first or get neighbor to jump start this evening

Off to take battery out the car

Be very carefull if you jump start, follow the correct proceedure in the handbook or you may enter a new world of pain.
 
ITS THE BELT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its still whole but split in one place and actually off of all the wheels. So I need a new one.

OMG I am going to have to take the fan out with that fan tool and wrench think.

I will have to see if I can order off of ebay.

It would not have done any damage I hope . Facing the engine bay bottom left there seems to be a small belt down there.

So fan out belt on. If you use wrench bottom left wheel it moves up and releases to allow for belt to go on slack (So ~I believe)

Go to the Radiator How To - I have dims for a home made Pulley spanner in there!

Remeber the fan is a left hand thread....

I am sure with thought you can thread a new belt on without having to remove the fan - you kinda have to thread it over the blades then rotate fan then over some more blades etc....PITA to reach the tensioner bolts, but I am sure it *could* be done...

Two belts the second runs the AC Compressor

OUCH!!! the bananas down the back of the fan and took the old complete belt off up and over the fan so just need to whack a new one on

It did take me 5 minutes though lol

need to get the retention bolt on left wheel

Which do I buy its the big belt on the right side looking at engine bay from front

If it is just the one belt running round Crank, Alternator, PS Pump and the Tensioner I would say it is Part No: PQS000100

Always aim for OEM if funds allow in my book!

yes that's the one I think with 4 wheels and two others with no thread on right by the water reservoir pot side

so im going to order it

just hope putting it on without taking off fan is as easy as taking the belt off

ok just a spin and a wiggle.

I have water running out hmmm maybe the electronic stat.

So may take fan and shroud out so I can see all. might need tighten. Or I may take the under valence thing off and look up

but yes cheers ok I will check the idler
