So basically I'm after a half decent heavy duty battery that doesn't cost the earth, as my disco won't start at the moment and I know the battery is bad anyway, whatever I buy will be hit hard while I try to get the thing running

Yep thats why I now use Halfords for batteries as any issues can be sorted out easily.
Halfords with a trade card are pretty much on par with ebay/tayne price wise.
My limited experience with their batteries, they don't always seem to look after them and don't know what a new, healthy battery should look like. While i hope that's not usual, i won't buy a battery from them again

If you buy cheap, you will probably end up buying twice. As you say, it will likely be tested by a Disco.

Make sure your battery leads are long enough to cope with centre terminals.
From what I've seen on here, many cars won't. Mine certainly would be very tight IF they'd reach that far (Earth would be my problem)

I had exactly that problem and got around it by rerouting the standard earth, so should be OK. ;);)
If you want to see a pic of how just ask and I'll put one up, just not today as I have to go out soon.
