i am using this near 20 yr old 90 for short journeys at the beginning and the end of the day so two cold starts a day and very little time to recharge the battery. It is usually discharged so much within 3 or 4 days so that it fails to start the engine. Glow plugs are fine so i'm thinking a more powerful / longer lasting battery might be the answer. also i can jump start it fine so thinking it is not a compression problem. I've seen an advert for batteries at 4leafbatteries.com but not sure which to get or whether there are any other recommendations.

get the biggest battery that you can afford and that will fit in your battery box - i've got one rated at 110Ah / 800CCA

i fitted a motaquip (exide) battery 95ah 900cca cost £95 quid, not cheap but dead impressed spind my 2/14 diesel so fast...comes with a 4yr gaurantee too

The great big battery is going to make it worse as it will take longer to charge up to a decent voltage, though it will NOT take longer to lose voltage overnight in the cold. To start from cold you need maximum VOLTS at the battery to drive the big current (amps) through the starter. Cold batteries lose a lot of volts. Using your Glow a few times actually warms the battery up inside, and helps quite a lot. Four or five glows would be about tops I reckon.

As recommended, a much more powerful alternator would be a great idea, something that might hoick out around 100 amps.

Get to a scrappy and find a Volvo .....

Did the warming up of my existing battery technique and working fine - thanks very much for the explanation - at least I now understand why it was playing up!

Just been to Halfords for a new battery for 1989 TD

And following all the useful info on this thread just picked up their own brand,

12v 95Ah 800CCA with a three year guarantee.

Was £110 but with Tradecard paid £82 that 25% discount and a great battery for the motor at a fair price.

Cheers

Talk about bringing back a thread from the dead lol. I have to get a battery too. Typically in Canada we would measure the battery compartment, go to the store and get the biggest battery which fits. We did this for the BMWs mostly which comes stock with really strong alternators and upgrading them is a breeze, plug and play. I do this for my cars with high current audio systems etc.

Anyone knows off hand whats the OEM battery capacity for the 200 or 300 110's? Would also be great if you guys who did the bigger battery installations to measure the battery and post along with ah or CCA.

Thanks.

on my old 2.5 td i found holding the glow plugs on the for at least 30 seconds helped lol..

But yeh this thread was dead lol

I hold it for 30 sec everts time, and it always starts

Mine only needs 10 seconds at most .. and I'm running on between 50 - 75% veg oil!

It does have a large battery mind, that is in good condition.

From what I have researched, any battery with 750 CCA and above will be fine. I will so some measurements in the compartment for the maximum allowable size.

It will, especially in a warm climate. But it is always best to get the biggest you can, and have a bit of cranking power in reserve.

Agreed. That's why I will measure the battery compartment to see whats the biggest that will fit.

Used to do that and then head to Canadian Tire and grab the Eliminator batteries, one of the best batteries with awesome warranty. Wished I could import them.
