Yes clean up as much as possible and coat the battery box with oil.
After batt blow up the rust soon set in on items in my workshop.
 
There should be a hose from the vent hole, to the exterior.

One BMW E34's, with the battery under the back seat, it seems to be common that people would do the same thing and have them expolde eventually.

There is usually an little elbow that fit's into the vent hole and discharges gasses outside/under the car.

Thanks for this , I’ll look into. Can not remember there ever being one attached to a previous battery.
 
Turns out that the alternator is charging at 17 instead of 14. Suggested that I replace the unit as the regulator not working. Any recommendations for where to source.

I have used Mid Ulster rotating electrics. Good service at tidy price.
They supply whole units and parts to repair alternators, dynamos, starters for all makes.
Replacing a regulator is straightforward, [You tube video] in the meantime until you sort it run with all lights on to limit power to batt.
Lots of information on their site as to how these things work.

Is it better to replace the regulator on my 26 year old original alternator OR change the alternator (cost about £120 + fitting)
I’m not trying to save or waste money but to do the best for my Landy.

Bit of a tough question which depends on your need [ how quick you need it fixed ] and what sort of aptitude/skills you have.
Fit it yourself, pretty easy job.
Have a go at fixing the old one for spare in your own time.

It also depends on if you would fit a like for like replacement or go for an uprated higher capacity alternator. If uprating that would always be my recommendation but if fitting like for like then you might as well repair as long as you are confident enough with the process. Or do both a new regulator is cheap enough as long as you don't need the vehicle as a daily drive you could try rebuilding and if it doesn't work then replace and you have only lost a couple £ for a new regulator or the other way around, fit a replacement and then rebuild the old one as a spare.
