Hi All

300 tdi with what I thought was a battery drain. Checking the circuits to find which circuit was draining the battery, it may not be a battery drain. The drain only happens when the ignition switch is turned to the 2nd position turning on the ignition lights. With the big 60 amp ignition fuse unscrewed and removed the drain stops is it possible that the starter solenoid is faulty and drawing mega amount of power before I turn the key to the 3rd position to activate the starter?.

Any suggestions would be a great help.
 
Ruled out the glow plugs removed the relay no change, removed the alternator no change, removed the 60A ignition fuse the drain stops. With in a couple of days the battery is down on charge unable to turn the starter. This is third battery so that can be ruled out, it had a new ignition switch a year ago so I think we can rule that out as well. I will check the connections to the starter and earths.

If its dead after a couple days check the drain with no key in ignition. Why check it with ignition lights on? Then remove the fuse for the lights? Makes no sence. Don't rule out the battery. It may be your 3rd but doesn't make it not faulty, also it's your 3rd in how long? Is it the correct battery. Is the alternator charging at 14+v.

One last thing. How are you checking the drain?
 
The alternator is charging at 14.17 volts which is OK. This battery is a known good battery from a friends vehicle and has been working OK for 6 months. Im taking voltage drops across the battery. Electrics is one of my weakest subjects. What else is on the ignition fuse?.
 
take one of the battery clamps off and connect the multimeter between the terminal and the battery, have it set to amps, make sure everything is off in the car and the amps shoul read less than 0.06, 0.07 amps, any more than this will flatten a battery, make sure you wait a minuit or 2 before you decide it has a drain as some things remain active in the car for a moment after youve locked and walked away. if you have a drain start pulling fuses start with the ones in the car ( you may need some help ) make sure everything stays off though or you will get an amp reading

Some cars, like my D1 300tdi, will wait some 5 minutes and if you haven't set the alarm/immobilizer it will do it then ...

so go have a cuppa while you keep one eye on the dial/read out...
 
Cleaned all connects that I could find for the + & - feeds for the main battery it seems to have sorted the discharge out. The battery has remained at 12.9 volts for 2 days now. Thank you to everyone that replied
