Hi, just a quick (i hope!) question related to a battery-change for my P38, diesel, 2001 car.. I changed the (flat) battery on the car and now I get a few of the error messages (windows, sun-roof etc) that I think can be fixed..But, I also can not start the car; it is turning, but not firing up properly..any idea what this could possibly be? Thanks!!!

hi, disconnect battery live supply again and have drivers door open and ignition in accessory position , reconnect live supply again turn ignition on to full ignition and leave for a few mins, and then it should re-sync the key press unlock on remote and it should then allow you to start the vehicle

regards jim

When you say "not firing up properly" is it firing at all or just turning over?
If it's firing at all it's not a sync problem. Not firing it's likely to be loss of sync between the BECM and engine ECU, pretty rare on the diesel but it does happen, if that is the case it will need to go on diagnostics to re-sync, or you can buy a sync mate to DIY. You could also consider the Nanocom EVO which will re sync the car and give you full diagnostics.

Put up your location Brutus, there may be someone close by with diagnostic capabilities.

Helped my dad get his Jag started earlier.. it had been standing with a flat battery for a couple of weeks, so key turn brought all the lights up and then they faded. Connected battery booster, and tried again.. Started, all working, drive off. WHY can't P38's be this well behaved??? :p

My 2 are:D

Well true, if cared for they are :p
But it'd be nice to have a little bit of forgiveness when you make a mistake :p

Hi, thanks for answering..I have tried this method now a few times, but no luck it seems!?!? The radio and windows, sunroof etc work ok (after i got initial error messages) and the starter engine (if there is such a thing) works..just not the main engine..too bad!

Hi, thanks for answer. The starter motor works, but the main (normal) engine does not engage..perhaps i'll try some of the options above though - thanks

Is the starter turning the engine quickly or is the engine struggling to turn?
A cold, slow turning diesel won't fire.

Have you got fuel coming up to the injector pump? There is a piece of clear pipe in the line ideal for this.

if your engine wont turn over after changing the battery try shutting the door and lock it with the key and then unlock it with the key then lock it with the key fob and unlock it again with the key fob then try start it thats what i have to do with mine when i disconnect the battery

When my battery's been off and put back on if i try the fob it don't do nothing try to turn car over nothing put it in ignition barrel turn too position 1 wait 30 secs and all is good ..1999 earlier ones are Different

Thanks for replies guys! I have tried a whole range of different things with keys, EKA codes etc, but no luck so far unf. I'll try a little more, else seems i have to get hold of one of those syncmates etc..
