No it fitted the hole perfectly. Bolt holes were perfect, door jamb was fine, window slotted in, no problems at all. I was just dissapointed that within a couple of years rust was showing at the joints.

Fair enough. You are the first person I have ever read that says, “fits perfect”.

Entirely dependent on the paint you use.
Metalic/pearlescent/xirillic almost invariably yes.
Solid colours it depends whether you are using a topcoat - which is shiny from the gun & doesn't need a lacquer - or a clear-over-base which does need lacquer over.

this is all a bit technical for me. It’s paint out of a rattle can. Maybe I’ll just see what it looks like

Generalisation:

Metallic/pearlescent/xirillic are applied as a base coat which is the colour coat and also contains all the sparkly stuff. It dries to a matt finish and MUST be lacquered.

Solid colours - e.g anything that doesn't have sparkly bits etc in it - is generally applied as a top coat & is shiny from the gun. Doesn't need a lacquer. If you think of a tin of Dulux Gloss White house paint then you've got the idea.

Can we have the details of what paint it is?
Will say on the side of the tin.

Aha, good question. Pictures attached. I think it probs does need lacquer

Yes it does. It's a 'basecoat' and they must be lacquered.
Rioja Red is a metallic & metallics must be lacquered.

'Solvent' means it uses thinners to thin it and not water.

Is that an aerosol?

Gotcha. Thanks everyone for walking me through this. Yeh it’s a rattle can.

Normally two coats of lacquer.
You'll be best getting it from the same people as the paint.
As it's a solvent basecoat be careful applying the lacquer (which will also be solvent based) as too much in a heavy coat will run and lift some of the metallic so you get a sparkly lava flow type of effect.
You need to apply enough to get proper coverage without any runs/sags and than apply the second coat after the flash-off period given in the paint instructions for the first coat. And that's something that only really comes with practice.

If you do get runs & sags in the lacquer don't try & do anything to them until they've thoroughly dried. After which carefully sand smooth & polish. If you go through to the basecoat then you will need to start the whole process again.
If you get any when you put the basecoat on you'll need to let it dry, sand smooth then apply more basecoat until the panel is uniform.. Any faults in the basecoat will not be hidden by the lacquer

Great. Thanks. Actually managed a decent job with the spray cans and my greenhouse as spray booth. Saying that I’m not bothered if it’s not perfect as the rest of the Landy is, well, a **** heap. Just 4 more to do now
