Hi, my petrol 109 when towing, has started to bang and judder appallingly as I try to take up drive. Worst when Hot but almost impossible to move off. feels like the prop joints are being snatched backwards and forwards and something will break soon. there are also tinkling, rattling and ringing noises.
Any Suggestions?

Yeah get under it and see what's causing it. My crystal ball is away for service.

Have you looked at the prop or props if your in 4wd which you shouldn't be on the road with no centre diff. Does the rattling/tinkling sound like pinking? if so what fuel have you got in it and how old is it, what timing figures have you got at idle, say 2500 and nearly maximum rpm?

Give the props a good shake side to side (in the direction as if you were trying to bend it)

To check props you will have to take the weight off them. Chock a rear wheel front and back then lift a front wheel off the ground to check the front prop and then the non chocked rear wheel to check the rear one.

, the banging etc is from bell housing , front of gearbox, feel it through my feet and hear from 10 metres away- even wife is worried by it...
engine is fine
. This morning pulled away ok , but it gets worse as it gets hot.....

When you have dropped the rear prop off check the diff input flange for excess backlash and then take a look at the hand brake on the rear of the gearbox. A lining may have come loose and caused mayhem in there. If all checks out move on the rear half shaft drive flanges then gearbox and engine mountings. There are so many things to look at and eliminate.

Drop the oil into a strainer and see if anything unexpected is present. And if that's ok check the main shaft nut is not loose.

Broken or very poor engine / box mounts? Had a similar thing when I first bought mine - felt like it was hopping on the front and dreadful clutch judder. In reverse it was just like the rear wheels were oval. New mounts transformed the whole thing from gear changes to vibration and smooth setting off.

That sounds like your clutch is worn and only showing yet when under load moving away. The tinkling sound is a giveaway. If it was the drive system it would be knocking noises and if the handbrake was seized it would be self evident. If it's only happening under load you may get away with it for a while.

I would still say check the handbrake, one test of that would be to whip the drum off and take for a small drive up the street or something, remembering of course you have no handbrake. Mine used to do it when it had been stood in damp grass and the shoes stuck to the drum, once i adjusted it it was fine afterwards.

Alternatively, jack up the landy on 4 axle stands and run it to see if theres an issue
