Well there's a surprise. Water was looking a bit low so I removed the oil cap and sure enough there was a little bit of the white stuff round the end of it.
Sniff test tomorrow and then a trip to the bank I reckon.

it is not always the case of head gasket going if you do not do long trips only short ones this can also cause it. hope this helps

Might be worth taking it for a good ol long drive for couple of hours to get it up to sustained temperature, If it is condensation it will evaporate.

Obviously have the RAC card at hand.......

I do about four miles round trip to work each day, longer runs at the weekends - mine used 2.5 litres of coolant in top ups over a year...it had a tiny bit of sludge on the inlet manifold gasket when it was changed last year and a tiny bit on the oil filler cap too - but nothing has happened..touch wood.

Topped it up this morning, took about 300ml to get it up to max. My garage is out of sniff test fluid so that'll have to wait.

well my wife's car did exactly that she did about 2 and a half miles a day going to work and back but no bus route, now and again we take it on a long run to really get it hot and I check the water every week as that is a must on the 1800 engine

Mine probably had the HG go at some time ...it might go with me who knows, its doing ok with the prt stat and jiggle ball removed up to now anyway :)

Didn't use any water today. Sniff test tomorrow ? Shame there's no rad cap, could have done the old condom test :)

if you are loosing water have a look at the header tank, see if there are cracks around the top ,if so get a new one, the wife now does 14 mile a day as the firm relocated and now no more mayonnaise.

Then it would definitely be ####ed.

Lol.
Slight water level drop today, no oilyness on the water though, no smell of zorst fumes in there either. Reservoir loooks knackered but no signs of cracks, they cheap enough though so I might replace anyway.
Can someone point me in the direction of a parts manual with numbers please.
This is so I don't have to explain to any more 'experts' which pipe I mean when I say 'the right angle one that comes off the centre of the head, goes onto a metal pipe, across the back of the engine, then into another rubber hose. I have studied my engine bay in some detail for all the hoses that fit that description, and there's one. 1. ONE.
