Its an 8 hour job even LR have it in the book as 8 hours. Ashcroft used to use 2 different fitters in the area and I know one wuite well and they will have 8 hours down to do it and the other one I guess is similar

I Didn't seem too unfair. pricey to us because we would faff about in the street doing it on our own but if you had to run a buisness its not too bad. seen alot worse!

Have you not got a mate with a driveway??

All you need is a jack or two, socketset, lots of Swearing and some brute force :)

8 hours sounds like a lot for a landy specialist i did mine in around 6 hours having never done one before! Pretty sure i could do it in under 4 now

I have done about 8 gearbox swaps on various. Defender being by far the easiest. But take in to account rusty floor bolts nuts, seized bolts on the x member time soon catches up they have to0 build that in. I know I could swap mine out in about 5 hours but its all been disturbed and been copperslipped. Plus what we call a finished job isn't always right they will have to re seal the floor fit carpets test drive etc. I really don't think it's all that bad with the warranty then grand. If I had a spare £1k then I'd be tempted but I wouldn't want anyone workin on my mota I'm not very trusting, Me!!!

I changed the clutch on a rangie classic at the side of the road in around about 4 hours. (two of us doing it).

I helped a mate to take out a disco gearbox over a pit and then helped replace it again a week later and I'm pretty sure it only took around a couple of hours each time and we even stopped and had a smoke and drunk tea during it too.

Sounds about right.

I was quoting time for gearbox out replacement in.

Not clutch replacement i missed that bit of the thread ;)

I also agree with Jai i for example would take the job being done with out putting matts etc back in and test drive final checks etc all things a garage would have to do.

Thanks for all the advice chaps, sounds like i can't afford to sell! I can't afford to take any less that £4000 for it with the new gearbox, or £3000 without, so it looks like i'll have to bite the bullet.

Will talk to the garage tomorrow and see what they think- i've got to know them pretty well over the years.

I'll let you know what i decide!

Cheers!

Right, arranged with the garage to do the work, so bread and beans for me for the foreseeable. Probably going to keep the old bus after all.

Thanks for all your help, i'll let you know how it goes.

Hi all,
Thought i'd just let you know how it all panned out as i'm about to collect the truck from the garage.
When the garage removed the gearbox, they discovered that i wouldn't have made it home as, not only was the gearbox very worn, but the input gear on the T-Box was shagged, the clutch fork had a big crack in it, the selector ball/knob thing was also worn (unevenly- weird), the clutch plate was about 85% worn, the release bearing was totally shagged and it needed new mounts. So reckon i had i done at the right time!
Any way all fixed now and cost £1160 total, including all the little extra parts. Was a bit delayed due to an unreliable parts supplier, but otherwise excellent service- as always.
If anybody's interested i use Buxton 4x4 in Derbyshire, have done since i bought the truck and have never had any bad experiences. Wish i could say that about other garages.
Right i'm off now to have a play.

:D:D:D

good news it all fixed mate but I would have had a go at it myself, did the clutch fork on my last disco (gearbox out method) and even with my limited technical skills and some help from a mate we had it done in about 4 or 5 hours.

Enough of that, get out there and get it muddy :D
