blus smoke after engine been rested usually valvle guides and or seals as has been suggested already, you dont need a torque guage for head bolts ,just felt tip pen as each flat of bolt is 60 degrees ,

Ok y'all, on the road again for a couple of weeks now, gear and transfer boxes changed and new clutch. Back to my earlier problem of blue smoke on start up which I think is getting worse.

I don't think there are timing issues, it starts and runs fine and steady but on cold start or when it's been standing for a few hours it chucks out a fair few clouds of stinky blue oil smoke. If I drive before I clear it, the engine will stutter or miss as it chucks the smoke out.

Once that 30 secs or so is done, it's ok, I travel up and down a mountain road 4 times a day for the school run so going up puts the engine under load and lots of overrun down the other side and it's fine; no visible smoke. I did 200km of motorway journey just yesterday and it was fine.

I assume/guess that this is going to be valve stem seals or turbo seals but how can I find out which it is? Or could something else be the culprit? As I say, I don't THINK that timing ids the issue as it runs fine apart from da smoke.

Cheers me dears for any more advice!

Rich

ps final thought, the battery is on it's way out I reckon; sluggish to turn over in the morning although it starts quickly and then it turns over fast after a run so I guess it's charging ok but not holding it. Don't imagine that's gonna make it smoke though......

i have this exact problem kicks out loads you can actually collect the soot ina bucket but once its run its fine. a clever bloke on this site said to use some injector cleaner in the fuel which has been working a bit but its still not great i have been told to decat it.... because apparently they block up ? so thats my next move.....

This clever(ish) bloke says your injector pump probably also needs a tweek to reduce the fueling Uglyduck. A bit easier to judge how much, now it's been running properly for a few weeks. Not convinced about the decat thing. If it blocks, you're engine performance will "die". Once given a good "blowout" on a run, it shouldn't give any problems - certainly shouldn't cause soot/smoke.

Did you manage to sort out the glowplugs yet?

Mark
PS Missed you're call earlier, but tootling about home till Tuesday if you want to call again. Might need a lift with picking up an engine from Donny sometime.

you alright mark glow plugs havent arrived been waitng 3 weeks reported the company to ebay left horrible feedback but still out of pocket so a trip to 4plusfour or what ever there called is in order i think... my battery new battery should arrive tomorrow so that should help..... as for the smoking issue been told by a few people it sounds like injectors..... i have manged to get my hands on some at good price so i dont know if to replace ? i'll goive you call anyway.

I'd try Andrew Page or GSF first, rather than 4plusfour.

There's an Andrew Page in Harrogate (not sure where though as its moved) or one in Harehills, Leeds too.

Will be a lot cheaper. You should be able to get a set of four for about £10-15 judging by prices on Fleabay.

I wouldn't jump into replacing the injectors yet, let me have another look/tinker first.

Cheers

be my quest with the looking/tinkering i'll pop round at some point.....

andrew page in harrogate is now down near bowling behind the court... i think.

Just noticed this thread (sorry, been away). Had the clouds of smoke when cold problem on a TDi200. Cause was a worn keyway on the crankshaft pulley allowing the timing to go out. If all else fails, check that.

blue smoke is burnt oil if only on start up its valve guides/stem seals ,white smoke that dissappears quite quick water in combustion ,white smoke that hangs around cam timing, dirty white smoke egr, black smoke over fueling obviously on start up and accelerating , fuel reaches combution chamber quicker than the air all the time injectors , i would first remove rocker cover and with thin screwvdriver see if valve seals are hard and ****ed ,to prove its not turbo remove rubber inlet pipe to manifold check with torch no excess oil in manifold and start engine wont hurt it but may black smoke when you rev it ,there is only a few ways you can burn oil, turbo blue smoke all the time gets worse when reved ,worn rings bores blue smoke all the time gets worse when reved stem seals only on start up
