I've just got a 200tdi disco and have discovered the rear door (boot or tailgate I suppose it is) will only open by turning and holding the door key in the "unlock" position whilst working the door release handle at the same time. If I just unlock it and then try to open it, the little plastic lock button (the one that moves up and down and is visible through the window) just drops. Is this a common fault and if so is there an easy fix?
TIA
Pigglet:)

Sounds like the small spring in the lock has had it one of the symptions is the door pin rising up to unlock and then droping down half way. Get the springs from ebay I'm told, and do a search on how to replace there's lot of info with pictures.

you can pop the little land rover badge out with a screwdriver, this will allow you to get a WD40 straw straight into the mechanisim. try this first....

This is what you are after: Landrover Discovery Door Lock Repair Spring Tailgate on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 18-Feb-09 13:04:20 GMT)

I have used this guy before, very good and comes with a few colour photos and instructions.

James.

wd was the first hope but further investigation has revealed the spring is indeed missing. I've ordered a set from that chap on fleabay and after reading a few posts on the subject it sounds like I've got some fun and games to look forward too!

I appear to have the same problem with my n/s rear door (door pin dropping) and the rear hatch has stuck.. so if you fancy posting a how-to!!

Yep... count me in to make up the numbers. I'm in the same boat, only my rear door doesn't at all - even by turning the key in the lock, squeezing the handle or any combination of any previously mentioned stuff

Get your springs here. Also search on e-bay (same guy)
http://disco-compatible-parts.com/springs.html

For workshop manual try this complete .pdf 14mb
LAND ROVER MANUALS DOWNLOAD

(But you don't need to dismantle the rear handle assembly)
Get the mech and linkages apart and follow the instructions that come with the springs.

I've attached a walkthrough for what it's worth. :D

I forgot to take pics.
I have to do this again on another Disco. I'll take pic's and post 'em then. Maybe a video would be better dunno.

It's a bitch the first time but gets easier.
Worthwile too. :)

That sounds like a different problem. Have you tried taking the green badge off and pushing the mechanism back?

I just fixed mine yesterday by replacing the spring something i dont wish to repeat any time soon.
Does it still open from the inside???

had the problem with mine today, door opened fine yesterday from the outside handle, tried it this morning and it didn't want to open, so i popped off the little green oval in the door handle, sprayed a little bit of PB Blaster at the mechanism and seconds later the door opened perfectly. :)

hi guys,
Min 97 disco just started with the same prob. Started after i had locked the front door with the key (sun roof open and alarm kept going off) After this, the rear door would only open with the key actually in it same as piglet. Is there some sort of deadlocking system at play here? Or is it a spring replace job?

Did the OP fix the problem?

Many thanks as always
