Back on the engine after a slipped disc stopped me tinkering.
Broken timing chain resulted in a top end rebuild on the 5 bearing 2 1/4 diesel and it’s not going well :(

fired it up today and the timing is a mile out. Loads of white smoke out of the exhaust and next to no power in the road.
I’ve checked the injectors and they are working well with good spray pattern and popping at the correct pressure, the tappets are all set correctly.

No matter what position I set the pump to it dunt alter the amount of unburnt fuel pouring out of the exhaust :mad:

looks like I might be a tooth out on the cam. Although I checked it several times before bolting everything back together.
Just not sure of the loss of power:confused:
 
Bent con rod?
Did you check all four pistons at max bore height when the head was off?
Compression check next.
 
Just wondering if a piston hit an inlet valve and bent it very slightly. Happened to me when the timing belt gave out prematurely on my old Fiesta diesel. I wouldn't have noticed except the valve wouldn't grind in properly only touching down on the seat half way round. You couldn't see any problem by eye. Only the one valve was damaged in my case. The rods weren't bent, I checked clearance with a steel straight-edge and feeler gauges.

The head underwentid a rebuild before my back gave out. New valves,guides and pushrods. Refaced the rockers and even lapped not only the valves but the guides anorl.
It all went back together with a new chain and a thermostat while I was in there. Then one of my slipped disks made a break for freedom and I'm only just walking upright again. Charged the battery yesterday and checked over the hoses and the like and fired it up this morning. Then spent the rest of the day dicking about with the pump to try and reduce the smoke.
Its breathing a little less hard out of the oil filler but that was a given when I replaced the disintegrating head gasket.
