Sean's got it in one! Base security is a MASSIVE reason alone...the smaller capacity stands don't have much of a base if things go pear-shaped. It's just common sense that something made for more tolerances will do a better job.
V8, there's no wastage of $'s...I regularly put heavier vehicles than my own on them, even for doing simple stuff like wheel rotations. I prefer to buy a better quality or standard item than 'what will get me by for now', as it always works out cheaper and better in the long-run. Buy cheap, expect it to break and have to replace it...better off going for the good gear in the first place.
Yet again, I concur.
If you spend a little more and get something more than up to the job so it has far less chance of breaking, how long would those axle stands last? 20+ years?In which case it's cost per year is pennys.
And if I'm going to be under my Landie with the wheels off, I want to make dam sure nowts going to happen.
Even if I only had to have one day off work due to injury, that would cost me more money than a bit more on a heavy duty jack and axle stands.
Plus with the likes of eBay / ad-mag / gumtree / free-ads etc, you don't always have to pay a fortune for this stuff.
I recently bought a trolly jack off eBay. 10 ton SWL, lifts higher than my axle stands , (so over 750mm), and designed for HGV use. These retail at £645 in Machine Mart. I paid £40 off eBay, (plus the fuel to Liverpool to collect).
Have a little patiance, look hard enough, and you'll find proper kit for peanuts.
If Joe Blogs wants to get under a Landie using just 2 ton axle stands then good luck to him. I really couldn't give a toss if it drops on him or not. I'm not so daft to risk it myself.
And to those that do? Well, you know what Darwin said about the dumb killing themselves off don't you?
