I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice on which axle I should get to replace the one on my 1990 defender so can anyone please help.
1990 defender fitted with 300tdi engine and R380 g/box. At the moment I have the original axle fitted to it but i need to replace it with another.
I have been told that it's best to fit an axle from a Disco that has disc brakes rather than the shoes that I have now. By the way......it's the rear axle that I want not the front one.
I have been told that I need to be careful what disco I take one from because some of them need a longer prop shaft the others and as I have just purchased a new rear prop I don't want to buy another one.

So.......can anyone please tell me what axle I need to get and what year, make and model of disco i need to get it from???

Any help on this would be very much appreciated ans at the moment i'm totally confused!!!
Thanx in advance

Means you all ready got a rear D shaft why not look out for a 300tdi Def.110 rear Axle as far as i know they are the same as yours only with Disc brakes. wish i coul'd get one for my 110 but they are as rear as hens teeth hear in Greece.

Ok, now I have been told that I need a Salisbury axle with disc brakes......so if anyone has a decent one for sale that they can get on a pallet for sale please let me know.
Thanx.......

if you are going to swap one axle, then make sure the ratios inside are the same otherwise your front and back wheels will be turning at different speeds. So if you use the unit off the Discovery, change front and back at the same time. This would obviously have the benifit of disc breaks front and rear :) - but be aware that your speedo will be out.

I suppose that is why the guy told me that i need the salisbury axle then.
Tyring to find one could be quite difficult though. I have an enquirey out on the net but so far the only quote I have had is for £500+. That's too much for me!!!!

you could buy a scrap disco for that...

man you have been are still being given bad advice.
What do you have? 90 110? Because this really is an important question.

If you have a 90 then:
Easy option: disco 200tdi rear axle or rangerover rear axle to 1992/3 straight swop no probs.
Salisbury you will need a new shorter propshaft defo. Stronger unit but not a straight swap on a 90.
If you have a 110 fitted with a salisbury rear axle then you option really is only a another salisbury. I got one for 99p but make sure its from a defender because series salisbury do not fit way way wrong.

But we need to know what you have? 110 or 90 or 130 etc

Hiya, I have a 1990 defender 110. Just changed the engine/gearbox etc. It's now fitted with 300tdi and R380 box. When I got the engine changed I had to have 2 new propshafts anyway so I don't want to buy any others.
The guy who is gonna change the axle says the only option is to get a salisbury axle, that is, without changing the front axle as well. Really need to change this rear axle as it's completely knackered.

Obviously the standard fitment on a 110 is a salisbury rear axle. However you could still fit an axle from a disco you only need to change the spring seats for the 110 ones. Moreover you don't need to change both axles whatever you use as all the defender and disco1 axles have the same 3.54:1 diff ratio. You couldn't fit an axle from a leafer as it just wouldn't fit so the diff ratio is irrelevant.

I really think thats a bad idea fitting a disco axle. Moreover its not upto the abuse/weight/loading for a 110. Its an inch shorter on the nose of the diff meaning you Will have to change the propshaft for a longer one which is neither available nor made as standard so it means you need a custom propshaft making extending. A 110 has HD axles for a reason an old disco unit is not up to it.

Later 110's look like they have a std rover axle, they don't. They have a 4 pin sleeved axle tube which equates to a seriously uprated axle casing and internals like the AWDC compers used to run years ago and the military now use.

Why is your unit faulty? Bearigs diff? Everything can be replaced and sorted and quite cheaply.

i think people were concerned that the op may get some series diffs if he had a 90 but as he has a 110 with a salisbury its now obvious.

More like "what's right with it". Bearings, diff oil seals etc and of course I also want to get some decent alloy wheels/off road tyres on it so I thought the best way to go was to change the axle rather than repair the old one. So anyway.........i'm still looking for an axle that fits....if anyone has one...

you can fit alloys over the drum brakes on the rear axle its only iif the mota has drum brakes then alloys will not fit the front hubs as they are the old deep type drive members and not because the rear has drum brakes and they cause problems. Been there done that. As for seals bearings possibly 70 quid and its good again. Or take your chances on ebay and get another shagged saisbury or pay 375 for a good take off one.

Have found a salisbury axle complete with callipers etc on the net for £300. This is probably the best way to go for me so now I just need to make certain that it is a defender salisbury axle and not a disco one.

Salisbury was never fitted to a disco.
