Hi,
I'm looking at buying a v reg freelander XEDI S Wagon which i have been told that the gearbox needs attention.
When i queried what the gearbox was doing i was told that they think the clutch has gone as when they press the clutch and put it into gear nothing happens! They are therefore unable to test the gearbox so have listed the car as 'gearbox needs attention'
Can anyone advise if they think the problem will be the gearbox (or clutch) or will the problems run deeper, ie the IRD unit, viscous coupling etc. What would cause the car to lose drive?
I don't mind replacing the gearbox if this is the problem but am a bit worried after reading so many people with ird / rear diff problems but am unsure if any of these problems would cause a complete loss of drive. Am going to view it on saturday so what to do i need to look at/ look for in particular?

Any advice appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Unless its dead cheap combined with excellent condition you'd be better going for a working one. You should be able to disconnect a rear propshaft & still run in two wheel drive mode assuming the ird wasn't seized but no drive at all suggests usual gearbox/clutch issues or possibly front driveshaft failure if someone had previously modified it to be two wheel drive only. Me, I'd leave it unless you've got a very cheap source of spares.
