hi i own a disco1 3.9v8 4speed autobox. gearbox packed up a few days ago. so i located a good secondhand one. after taking the old box off i left the torq converter on the engine when i suppose to have unbolted it and left it in the box did not know this. so when i was fitting the new box i lifted it onto the housing and zipped it up with the air gun only to hear this click noise. i took no notice as i thought it was the box pulling up on the dowels. well any way it turns out ive bust the pump gear but have bin told it could be the pin on the box. now if its the pin can it be replaced and what are your views on this have i knacered the torq converter. also to unbolt the torq converter do i take out the bolts which are in view from the plate which bolts off the bottom of the bellhousing i think there is about ten. or are the bolts located in the starter motor housing .please can someone advise plus having a job of locating a torq converter.

get the bolts through hole at bottom, only 4. will be pump drive.

hi when you say bolts at bottom is that were that halfmoon shape plate bolts off at bottom of bellhouseing. plus are there 2 types of bolts as i see about 9/10 bolts around the back of the fly wheel. you say 4 then and will this release it off the fly wheel.

4 bolts in flex plate, access thru holes in flywheel.

what do you think i have broke as i should have fitted the torq converter back into gear box housing. but i did it the other way round left the torq converter on engine and fitted box to engine . whats likely to have broke and could it be fixed.thanks

I undid my tc bolts x4 through the space the starter fits , diesel auto tho

id say pump is done for .

bummer of a job to do twice

if you remove the box and stand it upright with bell hgousing facing up you can unbolt bellhousing and remove pump housing is between bell housing and gear box ,you should be able to use the one out of your old unit ,when fitting ensure t/c fits further into bell housing from front edge than rear side of flexi plate from rear of engine by 1-2mm

took me 3 days to do it on my own i was well ****ed off ,so is it the gearbox side ive broken or the torq converter.

whats the tangs can i see them.plus is the pump gear in the gearbox.
sorry about all questions but im a manual guy not had autos.

up date .well ive had a rough ride.i have broke 2 pumpgears on the autobox. had the gearbox on and off 4times been working on this box for 6days and now finally descided to convert to manual. so brought the lot to do it today box.pedals.clutch kit. slave cylinder master cylinder flywheel. pipeing.got the lot for 500 pounds. and all going well should of done this in the first place. damm autos been a total night mare good luck to anyone who is or going to attempt to change there autobox. so easy for the torq converter to come forward off the pump gear then when you zip the bolts up if you hear a loud crack you fooked it. wont never touvh a auto a gain ive always had manuals.

Its really not as difficult as you make it sound.
In my view, its certainly less of a bother to have taken things slow with the auto and have gotten it right than the time and resources required to convert it to a manual.
I've found that its much easier to do when you lower the rear end of the engine a bit on a jack, in that way, the gearbox is offered to the engine at an angle which prevents the torque converter from falling out of the pump as its offered to the engine.

hi. i use a strong arm and i put it through the passengerside. then i put a sling round the gearbox and then get the balance so the back of the box tilts back.then i hoist the box up with the sling hanging down were the gear stick comes up better this way than on jacks. the first mistake i did was i left torq converter on engine and offered the box onto torq converter.then zipped box up this is what broke it the first time. secondtime i put torq converter in box then put to engine i then got 2 bolts in box pulled box in on half way on bolts so it located on dowels. then i put torq converter bolts in this is wen it must of pulled the torq converter off the pump then pulled box right up this is wen i heard the loud crack for a second time. when i spoke to blackcountry 4x4 they had the same probs and have never done another since. this was the first auto ive done as i have always had manuals...just couldent belive it when it went a second time .what i should of done is pulled box right up then bolted torq converter up. i t probably easy when you have already done them before but i couldent get anyone to come and help. if i had someone who had done one of thease then it probably wouldent have happend. never mind i suppose we all learn something every day.:)

hi i thought the same with regards to the manual bit.but im not far off with converting it over to manual on my second day today and should be finished doing it only some bits of pipeing up left .pedals all in . new flywheel all fitted with clutch plate. box is on. just got things like exhaust. cross member and props to fit. and bits and bobs and job done. but ive done a few in the past and i converted my last rangerover from petrol to diesel. but like i said if you done something before its easier the second time. nevermind im nearly there now and with the better option manual.

When I changed my autobox I was told to fit TC to box first and turn it until it locates properly. Was a bit of a pain keeping it in place but got lucky. Did the gearbox to engine bolts first then TC bolts.
The first test drive was a bit nerve wracking.
