Brave man! Re DVLA.
and yes you are a big tease!!
Lookin forward to seeing what comes out of all this!!!:):):)

well i guess most of us know it all depends who you talk to at dvla and where in the country you are, i see the electric car converters are having issues with reg numbers/V5s being withdrawn for things as minor as drilling a 10mm hole in a mini boot floor to pass a cable through, thats a modified shell apparently :(

so dose anyone know of an adapter plate that would fit on the back of the gearbox when i remove the transfer box to convert it to 2wd (will be using a remote transfer ), or have i got to make my own ?

Not sure what you are doing but am confused:confused: not hard too do though:).

The pics show a manual box vehicle and yet you keep talking about an auto:confused:.

But either way there were cars fitted as 2wd with both the hp22 or the R380 so you need to check which 1s, but as a start look at the BMWs and some Jags for the auto and the old rover SDIs for the manual. Probably easier to get the whole box then maybe only change the belhousing, as I am sure the rear would end up needing a different tail shaft and housing which would mean a gearbox strip down to change (guess;), so do some research).

If it’s gonna be 4wd why are you bothering with this:confused:.

Having run and been a member of kit car clubs for over 30 years I am quite used to all the hassles one can have with SVA, IVA ,highly modified vehicles etc.
Also people put all sorts of stuff on "just to pass IVA" then take them off to the extent that sometimes an inspector will grin ruefully and say "What are you going to put on once you get registered?!"
Jobsworths exist everywhere and IVA etc is a jobsworth's paradise!;)
But that hole is a nonsense. If you have a rusthole in a body/chassis you are allowed to weld a pathc in to pass the MOT so if blokey welded a hole up then he is just resoring the integrity of the vehicle.
If that had been me I'd have gone potty and taken it to court.
At the very least it would have proved that the law is an ass!

its been 20 years plus since i owned a landrover but im pretty sure its an autobox,

no gearstick and the twin accelerator cables to work the kickdown

2wd out of a jag would make life easy but i always assumed that diesel auto boxes would be set up different inside due to the torque curve but im no expert more an old codger who likes to tinker

the law is indeed sometimes an ass, but in this case i think there is a resistance by dvla to accept vehicles as electric as it means free tax no no no..

Yep you are right, its Auto. ( i was lazy and didnt zoom in on your last pics)

As I said you will have to do some research to see what needs changing to get to 2wd mode, the other boxes may also have slightly different gearing too.
If the change points etc are an issue then the valve block maybe interchangeable and change things.

Whatever you are up to, happy tinkering:).

hello happy tinkerer here :D
one of the reasons for wanting to remove the transferbox and bolt up a closing plate then slip a flange on the splines is that it makes for a much shorter gearbox compared to a rwd box, heres a pic of a 4 speed auto in 2wd format in one of my jago's ( ex v8 ambulance drivetrain ) it has all that tailshaft doing bugger all when space is at a premium when youve only got 93" or so of wheelbase, an extra 6" makes all the difference, well so the wife said

So are you saying you want to do away with the yellow bit, then keep the red bit?

Then put the transfer box somewhere else?.

Might sound harsh but the tailshaft housing is hardly any smaller than the TB in the first place so for the faff of a remote TB.
Until you really divulge what you want then we are all just running around in the dark.

yes thats more or less it i cant see the point of messing with a 2wd gearbox when all i have to do is remove the TB and its shorter and all the shift points will be in the right place etc
what im doing is using a mercedes g wagon rolling chassis its the same wheelbase as a 90, but it has a remote transferbox hence why i need a 2 wd transmission, i just googled for a pic as im not near mine right now, very similar to a 90 chassis except it has factory lockers front and rear,

its got nothing to do with if its better or worse than a LR chassis its because i have it, if i wanted to use a LR chassis i would have to go out and buy with with id, how much would that be ? this is mine i used to drive it around till it got rolled over and the body was scrapped its been in my name for 25 years dvla will accept it as a rebody ( should do ), its by far the cheapest option for me but doubt it would be if you had to go out and buy one

You should pop up to 4w motors(by M42 earlswood junction) they should have knowlage of gearboxes. I remember a 4.6 escort they had and other crazy cars like an 3.9 opel manta.
Take tea bags & sugar to get your foot in the door;)

So you must have seen rockys escort… the good old days ;)

good to see things don’t change. Been a few years since Iv been up. First thing I done when I went in was tea duties. Amazed how many appear when they hear the kettle

i dont remember seeing Rockys escort finished, i do remember the 3 door escort cosworth shell sitting outside the workshop door for what seems like years,
there were a couple of guys the twins ? one had a v8 rwd mk3/4 escort and the other a rwd V8 fiesta reyland motor sport ?, the escort guy couldent get more than 300 bhp out of the rover so he switched to an LS1 V8 that was a while ago so some details maybe a little sketchy im an old fart now lol
and yes every one has to have a go at tea duty
