Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my 2001 P38 4.0 Range Rover that I have had conflicting diagnostics over. A couple of weeks ago, the reverse gear stopped working. It just will not reverse. No problems with forward gears at all and no loss of power. I can reverse with little pull in low ratio, but no movement at all in high ratio. I have been told that I need a new transmission box, that the reverse clutch has gone and I could get the gearbox rebuilt and I have also been told that the selector box has gone and I should replace it. Can anyone provide me with some useful information of what to do now. Money is tight and I dont want to waste it on doing the wrong thing.
Oh and just to add, I am useless at DIY motor repairs.

Give ashcrofts a ring, they wont steer you wrong. auto boxes are never cheap, sorry.
 
Could be the reverse Solenoid has Popped .. Not a Major job to fix but a real BASTID to get at ... But you could also try Changing your tramsmission oil and filter ASAP. After you change it run for a couple of weeks then change oil again. No need to do filter. It would seem you have a sticking valve in the valve block that free's off as oil heats and thins and metal expands. You may just clear it with new oil worth a try.

Sounds like your one way clutch is now a two way clutch.
 
I was recommended Lucas stop slip in the main box helps when you do the final oil change.

This Lucas Stop Slip....

Is this something we should all think about putting in as our gearbox's get older?

Or

Is it something to add to prevent a problem getting worse and should we start using to prevent future problems:)

I understand that newish vehicles that show symptoms of sticking vales etc are cured from this. Its about £10 per shot and once in its in... its thicker than the ATF. I likened it to what Mag GTX was to engines when it first came out.

They engine oil treatments also but as this oil in changed frequently enough (and unless your putting £60 oil in) your not saving anything by doing it in the engine oil.

i used that in my p38 when i serviced it,what a difference it made to the way the box works.changes up and down now as smooth as silk.very pleased with it.:);)
