If it were for towing I woulda said auto. If it's for normal road and offroad driving then manual every day of the week.
why the fuss about auto vs standard for towing? big rigs standard trans no problem 120k# rolling on the road up to 90mph

Most landy drivers would rather slip a clutch than use low box (it's almost like they forget they have low range). If towing heavy loads on a regular basis it's easier to have an auto to prevent burning the clutch out. I prefer manual no matter what as I use engine breaking for lowering vehicles aswell as using low range for when towing them.

Just got my TD5, test drove the auto and the manual, in such a large vehicle i prefered the auto as lets face it neither will change the fact that its a big, heavy slow vehicle anyway, much more relaxed driving the auto for me anyway, personal preference i guess.

In your price range you could find a Disco II TD5 auto/manual as well as well as TDi Disco I's

In my opinion the TDi autos are VERY good vehicles on and off-road. I took one to Morocco a couple of years ago and did about 5000mls without fault.

Over the 16,000mls I had her she averaged 33mpg. She was De-EGR'd and De-catt'd to make her run as good as poss and she was utterly reliable.

IMHO autos are better off-road because you can work the box like a manual for descents, but leave in auto for flat or ascents - works really well.

Again imo having owned 4 DiscoII TD5 autos, the manual box is better overall in that car. There is a weakness in the engine/gearbox combination that is only satisfactorily resolved by changing the torque converter for one with a lower stall speed.

If you can find yourself a good, rust-free, mechanically fit TDi 300 auto you won't go far wrong at all. I drove a friends '97 model this morning and it really surprised me how good it still is, at 97,000mls and 14 yrs old.

Go for an auto imo.

I've never owned an auto before mine, test drove it and loved it. Makes off roading easier and hassle free, makes traffic a dream, and the 300tdi auto has more power (iirc about 6bhp) than the manual to make up for the power loss (sure someone else can confirm). I don't think I'll ever drive a manual except for a sports car.

Cruises at 85 @ 3000rpm doing 35mpg so can't complain

On the daily commute, Red cruises at 56 @ 2000rpm (no idea what MPG but easily pushing 40), and EVERYONE complains! :D

She'll sit at 85mph/3000rpm all day long if required, but I tend not to be in hurry to get wherever I'm going.

Mine is auto and so easy to drive off road you always have drive to the wheels, also hill decending is easy just use low range pull the lever all the way back to 1st gear works every time, but i think its personal choice try both if you can and then decide.

Yeah try both make your own decision.

But my God I love driving an auto.

Way home from festivals was beautiful, 5 people, all our tents etc, heavy traffic, cruise control on and just use steering controls rather than pedals for 95% of the journey :D

You also have a free hand for other things like a cup of tea or using the cb, must be a pain in a manual lol.

I like to get where I'm going as fast as possible ;)

Auto for me, easy and relaxed driving, most people have replied with similar choice, one thing to note if you go auto and want a little grunt off the lights plus better ecom, get it remapped.

had mine done for towing transformed the car completely.

To be fair, fast accidents do tend to be less fun than slow ones.
Unless you're an observer, in which case fast is waaaaay more popcorn friendly.
