Auto or manual

hey everyone, i am having my engine replaced, gear box and wiring loom replaced.

my question is

  • my mechanic is saying that i would be aswell changing from MANUAL TO AUTO
  • as this shall benifit me as i do long road trips in my car, do you think this would benifit me and if so can you please explain WHY....????
  • I understand the pleasure of driving Manual
other question

  • as i am having my engine changed is there anything you would recommend i do to the engine bay at this time. ( sound proofing, rust treatment etc. )
Thanks everyone

P.S. I TRUST MY MECHANIC, BUT WOULD LIKE YOUR VIEW ON THIS

I always like the thought of an auto box, just for the ease of use. But you need to consider a considerable jump in fuel consumption, and a horrible engine note as well!! Like i said, like the idea, but not the practicalities!!

i cant belive how fast people reply on here, it is great to get some good advise,

i dont know why it did not cross my mind about the fuel, but it didn't filling up a tank over here in Dubai is only 20 pounds per week but that still not a solution as i will take the defender when i leave here.

thanks Danberry

In that case, it's entirely up to personal preference - an auto can be excellent especially for town driving, but can sap a lot of power and, as has been said, will reduce your fuel economy.

Off road, the difference is negligible and as I said - is entirely up to personal preference as to which is 'best'.

If your current manual gearbox is in good condition and is working - why spend more to change it?

Welcome to the forum by the way :welcome2:

thanks for your reply, this is what i was thinking also and just need other like minded people to put insure that the ideas that i am going to choose for my defender is the correct one's

thanks again and it is good to be on a forum with like minded people.

tamcameron,

i loved Dubai, twas there a few years back stayed for almost a month. Japanese restraunt was lovley king prawns and dip twas great. Irish bar was cool to get some good company and beer. Cyclone club was an experience being almost 21 trying to get to the bar before being grabbed and pulled by loads of russian ladies. Music was fantastic aswell wish I was there now! Lol

personally i would stick with a manual. I had a TD5 auto disco before my TD5 defender and wouldnt change it back. I just prefer a defender with a manual box.
