After not being able to drive my newly acquired 1999 td5 due to leaking gearbox, it appears, that i need to purchase and fit another gearbox to resolve the problems, as per advice from my local land rover repairers.

Gearbox oil pump leaking
large seal (internal)at front
little seal at back
two gaskets?

But have been informed that there are two types of gearbox. How do I decipher what gearbox I have????

Much thanks.

cheers:eek:, the o ring for pump, seal and gaskets are the same throughout the range of zf hp22 boxes,if front seal has gone bush that supports torque convertor in box needs checking

Thanks. Well I've managed to get a gearbox specialist to take a look on Monday, to see if it can be repaired or a new box is required. Im keeping lots of things crossed. But land rover repair people have basically said they won't touch the box as it's auto and i need to speak to gearbox specialist.

Thanks again.

The wife is slowly calm from the raging bull with pmt syndrome. I see where she's coming from though as I've only had the car 12 days.

luckily i am one ,was there other symptoms apart from leak ?

To be honest the car drives as it should, just leaks about half a cup of gearbox oil a day. If you read my other post "4x4 specialists" you'll see my issue.

Since spoke to the last mot tester who contacted the previous owner, very helpful.

if oil is clean in it repair shouldnt be expensive at all apart from box removal ,pump is in a sandwich plate directly under bellhousing so full strip of box isnt necessary

So far been told indirectly by previous owner it's been leaking for two years.
I've also been told, over the phone, that its a complete gearbox out job, repair the leaks, gearbox back in.

Total £500 but that's without looking at the job.

The two garages who have looked at it have not mentioned dirty oil, but that's no saying it is or isn't. Although its booked in for Monday at gearbox place, as you're in the know, Im in cambridgeshire, can you recommend anybody?
