Tech Q for you gearbox folks......

reversing back in an auto. but while still rolling backwards, moves gearbox into drive. now no drive......

do you reckon gearbox fecked, or some valve blown?

No drive at all?

I've done that plenty and the clutches usually take up the slack, suppose it depends on how fast you wuz rolling backwards?
 
Gearbox slipping like knackered clutch. Reverse is ok and it is possible to move and when you eventually get above 30 a little better until you reach incline then virtually stops.
 
Clutch band give up the ghost, reverse is achieved by rubbing two sets of clutches in the opposite direction.

Unless the torque converter has given up?
