hi mates..ive got a 1996 auto 300tdi disco and since i bought ive never know there is a filter inside the gearbox..:eek:...till today...so the q is..what kind of oil does it use...and how often should i suppose to change the oil and filter inside it..>???..thanks :confused:

Dextron2 ATF, drain it from sump, remove sump (6 bolts) remove filter (3 torx bolts) fit new filter, seals, sump seal and refill with oil through dipstick tube.
If you look at my gearbox thread there's some photos :)

Don't know but if you've never done it since owning yer disco then I would definitely change asap. Is a fairly cheap way of ensuring your box is well looked after, and before my old one broke I saw a massive improvement in smooth gear changes after changing ATF. It also sorted the 'clunk' when selecting reverse..

oh GOD ur absolutely rite on mark mate!...will do that ASAP...mine giving a bigg clunk! on reverse!...will change as soon as i got the spares...thanks mate

According to my service book in normal use fluid and filter change is 24000mls.
Now the fluid is Dexron lll spec. it was Dexron llB spec when your disco was built.
Info: Dexron is a General motors spec.

I've alwas had a clunk, but that's i think is because I change into reverse straight away like a manual box.
If i take it as D-N-R then it clunk's only some times thats over 23 years of auto box use

hi mates, as a temporary measure, ive changed the gearbox oil first...after getting the filter from UK ill change it right up again. But the q is..how much oil should i fiil it up with??..
ive already pour in 4 liters and upon checkin the dipstick it shows more than double the higher mark...is that ok mates..??...its an auto gearbox..:confused:

There is a specific procedure to go through, when checking the oil level on these auto boxes:

1. Commence procedure with a cold engine, start the engine;

2. Cycle through all gearbox positions and then back to P;

3. With the engine still running, now check the level on the dipstick;

4. The difference between Hi and Lo on the dipstick is 0.25ltr

Cheers
Dave

thanks dave ill do that when the engine cools down later...so how much oil would i need to fill her up after oil change mate..?

It varies slightly but approx 4.5ltrs of oil should do it. Go by the level on the stick and do the last top-up very carefully.

also remember that not all the oil drains out, oil is still held in the unit.
Oil should be changed again after 500 miles but in your case as you are waiting for a filter when you drop the oil and refill that will do.
Be careful not to overfill

hi mates ...ive check according to the procedure this morning..and the dipstick mark shows well above the higher mark...it looks a bit overfilled..what will happen if overfill?..what should i do mates..??

I've had problems getting a reading sometimes, make sure you go through each of the gears from top to bottom, then back up stopping at neutral.
Would be very cautious of driving it if there's too much oil in there

thanks graham...but u know what?..ive drain exactly 500ml of oil yesterday...and upon checkin back this morning when the engine is cold...it was right on the higher mark...so i guess it should be ok now :)..hopefully...

but one thing was most terrifying me was that ..the 500ml liter i took out yesterday was kind of red+black in colour..looks so dirty!!...remember i only changed the oil 2 days ago...what does this means mates..?? is the gearbox filthy with dirt/oil...or is it possible engine oil to mix with gearbox oil...??..or is there something else i dunno abt..??

What colour was the old oil you took out before?

If it was dirty then as someone said there is a little of the old stuff left its probably mixed with, which is why you change it again. Also you were running a dirty filter until yesterday.
