hi
i have a problem again!!! my freelander has started slipping in top gear when it gets warm but doesnt happen all the time.
i have fault codes

p0100 and p1605

any ideas??

thanks
danny

Sorry mate, but these 'ere codes ain't got nuffink to do wif g/boxes.

P0100 is a MAF malfuntion.

P1605 is a 'Keep Alive Memory Test Failure' whatever that is.

If yer box is 'slipping' when warm I would check:

1. That the fluid level is correct.
2. When it was last changed.

If it's way overdue for a change (60K miles) or low on fluid it might well erform badly.

Is it changing smoothly or jerkily?

a little jerky.

Check fluid level immediately.

One problem is that you cannot drain ALL of the old oil out - so it can only be a part change.

When was it changed last?

If you don't have cast-iron proof of it recently then
I suggest a g/box oil change right away- it can work wonders.

Check on here for all the things to look out for if you're going to DIY.

Had something similar with the wife's RRC... Fair play to her she got a bargain cos it was described as jerking and 'slipping' when warm, so she bought thinking it would 'just' need an autobox change...(like I wouldnt have enough to do)
She got it back and found all that was wrong was the fluid level was WAY too low..I topped it up and now running fine.
Start it cold, select neutral then check level dipstick. Don't bother doin it without the engine running or when hot cos youll get a false reading

i took it to a AUTO SPECALIST today they said the top end clutch have gone costing about 800 to 1000 to repair but he cant guarantee it. best to change box !! at a cost of 1900 quid

He would say that wouldn't he.

Before spending £100s and £100s try an ATF fluid change first - at around £30 or so it's worth a try.

needs to be the exact amount of the exact correct fluid with the gearbox at the exact correct temperature IIRC, best left to the experts unless you've got access to ramps etc

box is knackered.

has anyone changed an auto box with the car on axle stands???

and has anyone got a box they want to sell....?

cheers

if you can support engine from top and drop subframe of not too bad but is heavy ,if you end up with your old box spare would you want to sell it ,

hi mine went that way it was the clutches and the piston had a crack in it it cost 950 cash and they give me a guarantee of 12 months and they have been doing auto boxes and gear boxes for 40 years autobox longton stoke-on-trent they will tell you what is the problem

Part ex your old auto against the replacement. Go to ashcroft transmissions if you need one. Have a look on their site un see the prices they charge for the auto and their fitters to install. They is the nuts on reconditioning the jatco.

has anyone ever had the top end clutches repaired?
if so have they had any problems with the box after it?

had a quote for 750 to fix the top end but they cant guarantee the rest..
